In summary, the conversation is discussing the relationship between the Immigration and Naturalization Service (INS) and the Department of State in the United States. The INS used to be a part of the Justice Department, but is now called USCIS and is under the Department of Homeland Security. One participant suggests using Google for more information.

Hello,

I'm not sure whether to post this here or in the politics and world affairs sub-forum, just a small question:

is Immigration and Naturalization Service a part of Department of State in USA, or are they entirely different institutions?

Thanks

Well, I googled immigration and naturalizattion service, and clicked on their home page:

http://www.usdoj.gov/ins/

That gives a statement about a change in ownership, and redirects you to their new home. Does that help? Google is a wonderful tool, BTW.

INS was a part of the Jusitce Deparment, it is now called USCIS "US Citizenship and Immigration Services" and is part of the new US Department of Homeland Security.

Edit: I see Berkeman already answered.

FAQ: Immigration & Naturalization: Is INS Part of the Department of State?

What is INS and how does it relate to the Department of State?

The INS, or Immigration and Naturalization Service, was a division of the Department of Justice that was responsible for overseeing immigration and naturalization processes in the United States. In 2003, it was abolished and its responsibilities were divided between the Department of Homeland Security and the Department of State. The Department of State now oversees the visa application process, while the Department of Homeland Security handles enforcement and citizenship processes.

Is INS still a part of the Department of State?

No, INS was abolished in 2003 and its responsibilities were divided between the Department of Homeland Security and the Department of State.

What is the role of the Department of State in immigration and naturalization?

The Department of State is responsible for issuing visas to foreign nationals seeking to enter the United States. This includes processing visa applications, conducting interviews, and making decisions on whether to approve or deny a visa. The Department of State also has a role in managing the refugee and asylum processes.

How does the Department of Homeland Security handle immigration and naturalization?

The Department of Homeland Security is responsible for enforcing immigration laws and overseeing the naturalization process. This includes conducting background checks, enforcing immigration policies, and granting or denying citizenship to eligible individuals.

What changes were made to immigration and naturalization processes after INS was abolished?

After INS was abolished, the Department of State took over the visa application process and the Department of Homeland Security became responsible for immigration enforcement and naturalization. This change was intended to streamline and improve the efficiency of the immigration and naturalization processes in the United States.
