Index Set alonside Bigcap and Bigcup - as in Paul Bland's book .... ....

In summary, The conversation is about how to get the index set \Delta alongside \bigcap in a text from Paul Bland's book "Rings and Their Modules". Peter is asking for help and greg1313 suggests using single dollar signs as delimiters. Peter apologizes for not finding previous posts on the topic.

When I write

\bigcap_\Delta M_\alpha

I get

\(\displaystyle \bigcap_\Delta M_\alpha\) ... ...How do I get the index set \(\displaystyle \Delta\) alongside \(\displaystyle \bigcap\) as in the following text from Paul Bland's book "Rings and Their Modules" ... ... ?View attachment 5836Hope someone can help ...

You could use single dollar signs as delimiters: $\bigcap_\Delta M_\alpha$

FAQ: Index Set alonside Bigcap and Bigcup - as in Paul Bland's book .... ....

What is an index set?

An index set is a set of numbers or symbols used to label or identify elements in a collection, such as a set or sequence. It can be finite or infinite, and the elements within the set can be any type of object or entity.

What is the meaning of Bigcap in index sets?

Bigcap, also known as intersection, is a mathematical notation used to represent the set of elements that are common to two or more sets. It is denoted by the symbol ∩ and is often used in conjunction with index sets to indicate which elements are being intersected.

How is Bigcup used with index sets?

Bigcup, also known as union, is a mathematical notation used to represent the set of all elements that are contained in two or more sets. It is denoted by the symbol ∪ and is often used alongside index sets to indicate which elements are being united.

What is the relationship between index sets and Bigcap/Bigcup?

Index sets are often used in conjunction with Bigcap and Bigcup to specify which elements are being intersected or united. The index set provides a way to label and organize the elements within the sets being operated on, making it easier to perform calculations and understand the results.

Can index sets be used with any type of collection?

Yes, index sets can be used with any type of collection, as long as the elements within the collection can be labeled or identified in some way. This includes sets, sequences, matrices, and more. Index sets provide a way to organize and manipulate the elements within a collection, making it a useful tool in many areas of mathematics and science.
