Lately I’ve been watching the fantastic physics lectures by Leonard Susskind on YouTube, which were offered to the public because of a strong interest in the subject by people who are too old for college. This leads me to my question: what resources are available for someone who wants to learn about subjects like modern physics, astronomy, cosmology etc. at a technical level but is no longer in college? I would love to go back to graduate school and study these subjects, but I suspect there is a strong age bias against someone who is 43 becoming a grad student, and it is rather difficult for me to relocate and become a full-time student in any case.
What I don’t understand is why there isn’t some kind of on-line school where you can learn about these subjects to an advanced level at your convenience. It seems to me if someone put a site like this together in an attractive way at a reasonable price there would be a decent market for it. I’m actually considering creating something like this myself, since there is really nothing available for someone in my position beyond self-study and forums like this. What do people here think of this idea?
