Is Investing in a Water Distiller Worth the Health Benefits of Distilled Water?

In summary, investing in a water distiller can offer significant health benefits by providing purified distilled water free from contaminants, heavy metals, and chemicals. Distilled water is beneficial for detoxification and may improve overall hydration. However, the decision to invest depends on individual health needs, budget, and preferences for water quality. While distilled water lacks certain minerals found in spring or mineral water, its purity can be advantageous for those seeking a cleaner drinking option. Ultimately, weighing the health benefits against cost and convenience is essential for potential buyers.

But does "pure pure" water have any real health benefits? From what I have heard, it's some minerals found in water that are beneficial."Injustice is the Seed of Revolution"- Sting1983

Distilled water is bad for the soul man. It leeches the minerals out of your body and kisses them goodbye. It's all about the half-reactions daddy-o.eNtRopY

You do not need mineral from water, useful minerals are absorbed from fruits/vegetable/meat.Distilled water helps carry oxygen to your cells, takes away toxic materials from your body, and finally you are healthier and live longer life._____________________Patience yields stamina.

Nah, that sounds like a load of pseudoscientific junk. Distilled water is no better or worse than any other clean water source.******************************A truly open mind has to be open to the possibility that a radical idea, however exciting, may prove to be a load of codswallop!

Distilled water may be .00001% better for you, but that isn't going to make my run out and buy an expensive Distiller. What ever doesn't kill you makes you stronger. Minerals and organic traces = yum.Now we also need to determine what pokemons public water system is like. if it's not good, then maybe a distiller is better for him.admin@physicsforums.com

What Is the Best Way to Purify my Water? Here's What the Experts Say:"If you decide on bottled water, make sure it's distilled, (however), in the long run you'll save money if you clean your water at home. It's more convenient than hauling gallon jugs from the store. The 'gold standard' for purifying your water is a system that distills your water and filters it. You have the comfort of knowing there is no chlorine, fluoride, bacteria, viruses, pesticides, or lead. You get nothing but H2O."Maximum Health.Dr. Robert D. Willix, Jr., M.D.--------------------------------------------------------------------------------"Let me classify the nine kinds of water. They are hard water, raw water, boiled water, soft water, rain water, snow water, filtered water, de-ionized water, and distilled water. All are kinds of water - but remember this: only one of these nine kinds of water is good for you.Distilled water is water which has been turned into vapor, so that all its impurities are left behind. Then, by condensing, it is turned back to pure water. It is the only water which is pure - the only water free from all impurities".The Choice Is ClearDr. Allen E. Banik--------------------------------------------------------------------------------"Distillation provides us with the purest water obtainable . . . by all means make the smart choice in the type of water you drink. There should only be one choice - PURE! And pure means distilled."Fit For Life II: Living HealthHarvey & Marilyn Diamond--------------------------------------------------------------------------------"Even tap water invariably contains a variety of poisons such as chlorine, chloramine, asbestos, pesticides, fluoride, copper, mercury, and lead. The best way to remove all these contaminants is by distilling."How To Save Your Teeth: Toxic-Free Preventitive DentistryDr. David Kennedy, D.D.S.--------------------------------------------------------------------------------"The home distiller is the best method and also the best way to get distilled water. It is the only reliable home water purification for taking fluoride out of the water."Fluoride: The Aging FactorDr. John Yiamoyuiannis, Ph.D.--------------------------------------------------------------------------------"Water hardness (inorganic minerals in solution) is the underlying cause of many, if not all, of the diseases resulting from poisons in the intestinal tract. These (hard minerals) pass from the intestinal walls and get into the lymphatic system, which delivers all of its products to the blood, which in turn, distributes to all parts of the body. This is the cause of much human disease."Dr. Charles Mayo of the Mayo Clinic--------------------------------------------------------------------------------"Again, let me state empathetically that, in my opinion, the misery of arthritis is caused by hard water saturated with inorganic minerals and an unbalanced diet, forming acid crystals in the moveable joints, plus inactivity of the body in general."Paul C. Bragg, N.D., Ph.D.--------------------------------------------------------------------------------Dr. Allen E. Banik, M.D., who spent much of his life researching the effects of water on the human body reported the following in his publication The Choice Is Clear:"The only minerals that the body can utilize are the organic minerals. All other types of minerals are foreign substances to the body and must be eliminated. Distilled water is the only water that can be taken into the body without damage to the tissues."The American Medical Association reported that, "The body's need for minerals is largely met through foods, not drinking water."--------------------------------------------------------------------------------"The greatest damage done by inorganic minerals - plus waxy cholesterol and salt - is to the small arteries and other blood vessels of the brain (75% water). Hardening of the arteries and calcification of blood vessels starts on the day you start taking inorganic chemicals and minerals from the tap water into your bodies."The Shocking Truth About WaterDr. Paul Bragg, N.D., Ph.D.--------------------------------------------------------------------------------"Distillation involves the process of vaporizing water by boiling it. The steam rises, leaving behind most bacteria, viruses, chemicals, minerals, and pollutants from the water. The steam is then moved into a condensing chamber where it is cooled and condensed to become distilled water . . . We believe that only steam-distilled water should be consumed."Prescription for Nutritional HealingJames F. Balch, M.D. & Phyllis A. Balch, C.N.C.--------------------------------------------------------------------------------"The only type of water that seems to be fit for consumption is distilled water, which is water that is absolutely free of any minerals or chemicals. Distilled water is made pure by first being heated to the point of vaporization, so that all of the 'impurities' are left behind. Then, the water vapor is condensed. The process results in water that is in its purest form. Distillation is the single most effective method of water purification."A Diabetic Doctor Looks at DiabetesPeter A. Lodewick, M.D.--------------------------------------------------------------------------------"If I lived on a desert Island, or a coastal location, or next to any body of water ie; sewage, toxic, salted, chemicalized, or poisoned, as long as I had my distiller I would not fear lack of pure water. Aircraft carriers can travel the high seas indefinitely, and have all the pure water they can drink. How can this be, when they are surrounded by salt water? They are fitted with distillers."Scott Workman_____________________Patience yields stamina.

2. Are there any minerals missing from distilled water that my body needs? It is true that you need minerals, but these are best obtained from your food and food supplements. There are two sources of minerals: organic and inorganic. Our bodies cannot easily assimilate minerals that come from an inorganic source such as the water we drink. Our bodies receive the minerals they assimilate from organic sources such as the food we eat. Green, leafy vegetable, meat, and dairy products are all good sources.Distillation removes the minerals out of the water before they can enter the body's system, and distilled water may also remove mineral deposits already there(in arthritic joints, for example). The minerals our bodies depend on are absorbed and remain in the tissues. Therefore, distilled water is best as it removes virtually all of the contaminants from your water. Of course, we do need some inorganic minerals, like sodium, but these are also found in abundant supply in food.3. Does distilled water leach minerals from my body? No, that is not an accurate statement. Distilled water is the purest form of water, the universal solvent. Pure water does absorb discarded minerals and with the assistance of the blood and lymph(mostly water), transports them to the kidneys for elimination. It is this kind of mineral elimination that is incorrectly referred to as 'leaching'. The expression that distilled water leaches minerals from the body is inaccurate. Distilled water does not leach out body minerals, it collects and removes minerals which have been rejected by the cells and tissues, which if not evacuated, can cause arterial obstruction, arthritic deposits and other potentially serious bodily damage._____________________Patience yields stamina.

Interesting article, and it confirms my first thought on this: distilled water cannot be healthy. What you should do is buy a filter system that will take out the heavy metals with coal.. that will work perfectly. Why take out all the minerals? Osmosis will still work with all the unhealthy compounds that you want to get rid of, since the watercompany already purified the water. Why are chemists great for solving problems? They have all the solutions

To start with, absolutely pure water, with no minerals in it, is only found in the lab. Make a habit of drinking it and it will leach trace elements out of your system. Open a jug of it and it is no longer pure, because of air contamination. Now then, distillation. Yes it does remove minerals, salts and most organisms. They are left behind by the steam vapour. Thus requiring regular descaling of the evaporator. However, standard practice is that the distilled water should have about 3-4 ppm of minerals/salts in it. It largely depends on the usage, lower for boilers and higher for potable. Note also, some organisms may be entrained in the steam, it depends on the temperature and steam quality(how much water is in the steam). As far as I know domestic distillers aren't capable of superheating steam nor of producing dry steam. Most evaporators I'm familiar with operate in the range of 170-180 F @ 20"Hg, increase the temp for coastal and inland waters as the lower the temp the more biologicals survive. Also, almost as soon as it condenses again it begins picking up minerals from the piping. How fast and how much? Depends on the pH and length of run.A proper system will include filters as well as the evaporator, which must be maintained properly. It will also include the means to control pressures and temps and record them, as well as the means to test the product. I'm sure the salesman will be more than happy to sell you the test kits for ph, hardness, chlorides etc. In other words you probably got taken in by a fast talking salesman. No shame just means he's good at his job, which is selling.Post the manufacterer's site and the model number and I'll take a look.To check into the facts try:

I always found that by wiping off the upper layer of 'pond scum' floating on surface, and being careful not to agitate the water and stir up the mud, that I could receive a double handful of delicious water from even the most inhospitable sources.Does anyone know about drinking ionized water? Hah, hah. I love how MD's think they know something about water.Let me tell you, distilled water ain't worth ****. If you want decent drinking water, use an activated carbon filter for the organics and an ion-exchange resin for the minerals. Most municipal water supplies have big ones on the front end, but you can get them for yourself if you like. Yeah, distilling gets rid of minerals, but those just add flavor. It won't get rid of organics in your water, and that's where all the nasty stuff is at."mmm, sacralicious"- HJS

Pokemon999 -You are being conned by people selling water distillers. I have a masters degree in environmental engineering (in which drinking water treatment is a big area of study) and those quotes from doctors are total crap. That "nine kinds of water" quote is particularly laughable.Yes, some stuff in water is bad for you. But some is good for you. Yes, you can get the good stuff from other sources, but drinking only distilled water is not only expensive, but it may also disrupt nutrient balances in your body. Perhaps it's not a high risk for most people (although for athletes, it can be life or death) but there aren't many studies on the long-term effects of drinking only distilled water.quote:Originally posted by kleinjahr:To start with, absolutely pure water, with no minerals in it, is only found in the lab.Not even there, although that would be the purest (99.9whatever%). quote:Originally posted by BoulderHead:Does anyone know about drinking ionized water? I had a friend that paid hundreds of dollars for a machine that would do this.De-ionized. If there are risks, then they are the same as distilled.De-ionization and distillation both remove lots of minerals from water, but through different methods. That aside, a deionizer is overkill for home use (not cost effective). They work great for laboratory water purification or for treating small volumes of industrial wastewater though. Homes should use simple filtration (if needed at all)...kind of like theOwl said...but not coal like that for fuel (which contains many contaminants)...more like an "activated carbon".--------------------------The Universe...is an unsettlingly big place, a fact which for the sake of a quiet life most people tend to ignore. As far as i know, you can't get 100% distilles water, even in labs, cause whatever the distilling way you are using, there will still be desolved gases inside it (since in the water will have contact with air at some step of distilling), unless there is some way that i don't know'i don't know i just think i do'[The Crown Holder]
