In honor of today's date, June 6, 2006, I've been circulating the Apocalyptic Magic Square around the office (yes, I get some strange looks, but I'm used to that).
This remarkable object is a 6 by 6 magic square with a total of 666, with every number in it being a prime. This object can easily be found on the internet, but the sites I've seen only present it -- they don't discuss it's mathematical attributes.
Is this object very special? I know there are algorithms for producing magic squares, but is it possible to use an algorithm to guarantee a magic square using only prime numbers? Is it possible to construct prime based magic squares of arbitrary size and/or sum? Is it possible to show that the Apocalyptic Magic Square is unique in any way? Any information on these questions would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.
