AVAST has a free version, and threat updates are added daily. You do need to have access to the internet, so that AVAST can "call home" and get the latest updates.
 
Other popular free anti-virus programs are AVG and Avira. Like Avast you need internet access for updates.
 
google is your friend. It will not only point you to lots of them, it will point you to reviews of them.
 
This week, I saw a documentary done by the French called Les sacrifiés de l'IA, which was presented by a Canadian show Enquête. If you understand French I recommend it. Very eye-opening.
