Learning about engines on a budget

In summary, one effective way to gain hands-on experience with small gasoline engines is to put out an ad on craigslist for non-working lawn mowers or snowblowers. By taking them apart and experimenting, you can learn valuable lessons and potentially even get the engine running. Another resource for learning about engines is the woodgears.ca website, which features tutorials on building an air engine from wood. Although it is not gas-powered, it can still provide useful knowledge about engines.

I want to learn about engines. Besides reading up on different kinds, what's a good way to get my hands on small gasoline engines, and what kind of things should I do to get some hands on learning?

thanks!

Put an ad out on craigslist for just what you are wanting to do. Somewhere I am sure there are nonworking lawn mowers, snowblowers, etc. that someone would be willing to let you take away. If you get it for free, rip it apart, screw something up, what's the loss? You most likely learned something right? If you get it running, well that's just a bonus.
