Lewis structure, hybridization and VSEPR

In summary, the correct statements for both POF2- and POF3 are that the P atom is sp3-hybridized, the F-P-F bond angle is approximately 109.5 degrees, the geometry around the P center is tetrahedral, and the bonds between P and O are a sigma and pi bond. However, it should be noted that while the number of valence electrons for POF3 is 28, this is not the case for POF2-. Additionally, while the minimized formal charge on P is 0 for POF3, this is not true for POF2-.

Homework Statement

Consider the related molecules POF2-
and POF3. Choose all the following statements that are correct for both molecules.

Homework Equations

A) P atom is sp3-hybridised
B) The F-P-F bond angle will be approximately 109.5 degrees
C) Geometry around he P centre is tetrahedral
D) Number of valence electrons for the molecule is 28
E)The bonds between P and O are a sigma and pi bond
F)Minimised formal charge on P is 0.

The Attempt at a Solution

I have found the general structure of both molecules.
....O

....P
.../..|..\
...F...F...F
POF3

...O

...P:(lone pair)
..../...\
...F...F
POF2-

I know D and F are wrong answers. I think the other 4 are correct. Help please

Thanks.

It’s should be pointed out for clarity that D and F are true for POF3, but not for POF2-.

FAQ: Lewis structure, hybridization and VSEPR

What is a Lewis structure?

A Lewis structure is a visual representation of the bonding and electron distribution in a molecule. It uses symbols and lines to show the arrangement of atoms and the sharing or transfer of electrons between them.

How do you determine the hybridization of an atom in a molecule?

To determine the hybridization of an atom, you must first count the number of electron domains (bonds or lone pairs) around the atom. Then, use the following guidelines: - 2 electron domains = sp hybridization- 3 electron domains = sp2 hybridization- 4 electron domains = sp3 hybridization- 5 electron domains = sp3d hybridization- 6 electron domains = sp3d2 hybridization

What is the significance of VSEPR theory?

VSEPR (Valence Shell Electron Pair Repulsion) theory helps predict the shape of molecules based on the repulsion between electron pairs. This is important because the arrangement of atoms in a molecule affects its properties and reactivity.

Can atoms have more than one hybridization state?

Yes, atoms can have multiple hybridization states depending on the molecule they are a part of. For example, in a molecule with trigonal planar geometry, the central atom may exhibit sp2 hybridization, while in a molecule with tetrahedral geometry, the same atom may exhibit sp3 hybridization.

How do lone pairs affect the shape of a molecule according to VSEPR theory?

Lone pairs of electrons take up more space than bonded pairs, so they exert a stronger repulsion on the other electron pairs in the molecule. This can distort the molecule's shape, causing bond angles to deviate from their ideal values predicted by VSEPR theory.
