Minor format changes that propagate to later paragraphs

In summary, when I highlight text and apply a format change, such as Bold, Italics, Underline, Strike-through, or Text Color, it properly changes the highlighted text for that particular paragraph, but then it (inadvertently) applies the same format change for all subsequent paragraphs.

When creating a post, if you go back to change an already entered line and click the 'B' for bold, the next character must be a graphic (printable) character. If a 'Space' or 'Tab' (or any cursor movement?) is entered then the 'B'old is cancelled. Also if a 'Tab' is entered the cursor disappears!

Work-around:
Manually enter the [ B] and [ /B] codes (without the spaces used in this explanation)

Things are getting curiouser and curiouser.
