Need to draw tangent at different positions of the graph

In summary, the conversation discusses the use of Origin for plotting data and obtaining an r square value of .98. The individual also needs to find the slope at various points on the curve, including x=0. They have tried using a plugin but it only provides three decimal points, which is not precise enough. They are looking for suggestions for other software, such as Matlab or Mathematica, which may be better suited for their needs.

Hi
I am currently using origin to plot my data and using their fitting options I am able to get r square .98. Now I need to know slope at different positions of the curve even at x= 0. I tried one of their plugin and it gives me only three decimal point and which is not good enough.

Could you please suggest some software like origin to make my calculation easily.

Thank you.
MD

erk - Origin is spreadsheety ... you can probably use Origin for this if you differentiate it. That will give you a sampled function of the slopes of the tangent at each measured point.

You are urged to learn something more matrixy like matlab, octave, or mathematica.

FAQ: Need to draw tangent at different positions of the graph

What is the purpose of drawing tangents at different positions of a graph?

The purpose of drawing tangents at different positions of a graph is to determine the slope or rate of change of the graph at those specific points. This can provide valuable information about the behavior of the graph and can be used to make predictions or analyze data.

What is a tangent line?

A tangent line is a straight line that touches a curve at exactly one point, without intersecting the curve at any other point. It represents the instantaneous rate of change of the curve at that point.

How do you draw a tangent at a specific point on a graph?

To draw a tangent at a specific point on a graph, you must first find the slope of the curve at that point. This can be done by finding the derivative of the function at that point. Once you have the slope, you can use it to draw a straight line that touches the curve at that point.

Why is it important to draw tangents at multiple positions on a graph?

Drawing tangents at multiple positions on a graph allows you to see how the slope of the curve changes at different points. This can provide insight into the overall behavior of the graph and can help identify important features such as maximum and minimum points, inflection points, and intervals of increasing or decreasing values.

What factors can affect the accuracy of drawing tangents on a graph?

The accuracy of drawing tangents on a graph can be affected by the scale and resolution of the graph, the precision of the data points, and the method used to find the slope at each point. Additionally, any errors in the function or data can also impact the accuracy of the tangents.
