What Is It?

The subject of our theme this week is on something that is not familiar to most people. This may be a tool, a gadget, a decorative piece, etc. You must include the entire object within the photo, i.e. it cannot be a snapshot of a small part of it.

You may include an explanation of the object with your submission, or you may withhold that information till the start of the polling for this contest.

Contest Rules:

1. Any digital photo or digitally-scanned photo relevant to the theme will be accepted within the contest period. In case there's a gray area, or you're not sure if the picture is suitable, check with me first.

2. Please resize your digital photo to no more than 800 x 600 or 600 x 800 pixels. You may also crop your picture if you wish. You are also allowed to adjust the brightness and contrast of your picture but these should not dramatically alter the look of the picture. But other than those, any form of picture editing or modification is not allowed. This is a photo contest, not a picture editing/special effect contest. You may add a watermark or your name/nickname to the photo for identification purposes.

3. Upload your photos to any of the photo servers such as imageshack or photobucket. Then post it the relevant contest thread and link your picture using the img command. PM me if you do not know how. Alternatively, you may simply upload your image file to PF, and then have the full image displayed in your post.

4. Only ONE picture per member per contest. Once a picture is posted, it cannot be changed other than a total withdrawl by that member from that week's photo contest. Exceptions will be made for modification to comply with the rules, such as resizing.

5. At the end of the contest period, I will open a poll and every PF member can vote for the picture they like best.

6. Note that in case we have a large number of entries, I will do the polling in more than one thread. If that's the case, you can vote in each of the polling threads. The photos will be assigned in the polling threads in the order they were submitted.

7. The photo of the subject must be something that you took directly, not via in intermediary medium, and not taken by someone else. Unless otherwise noted, a photo of another photo, painting, print, etc. does not qualify.

8. You can use a picture only once. Once it is used in a contest, it cannot be reused in another contest.

9. Please post only pictures meant for submission in this thread. Photos not meant for submission must not be posted in the contest thread. Posting of more than one photos by a member may result in an automatic disqualification from the week's contest.

Another great topic! I have so many options for this!

IMGA0138.JPG

I will keep the explanation a secret till the polling starts. Anyone eager to investigate what it is, is certainly welcome. Hint: It is a very old art form in West Bengal, India.

Once again, forgive the watermark.

Update: I might forget to provide the explanation. So, I am giving it now.

These are "Dash-avatar Cards”. These are not ordinary paper cards. A paste is prepared from some natural elements like tamarind seed butter and a round piece of cloth is coated with this paste several times to make it stiff. Then natural colours are used to depict the ten (dosh) forms (avatars) of the lord Bishnu. The actual playing cards have 108 pieces and the kings of the sixteenth / seventeenth century used to play with them. This is a very old form of art in Bengal, found in Bishnupur region.

Read the post here.

Full travelogue is here.

Nice, but do you normally put watermarks on the photos you take?

Actually, all these photos have been put up on a website: www.bcmtouring.com, where we write our travelogues. It is customary to put watermarks to show that the photo belongs to which user. This is also done to prevent duplication, which was done in a few incidents.

I also have the ones without watermarks, but I have to search it out from about a thousand photos. So, I just downloaded it from the website and posted here.

This is not a pile of rubble.
ovoo---1.jpg

It is an ovoo, a ceremonial mound used for shamanist Heaven worship in Mongolia. Travelers are supposed to circle the mound three times clockwise and drop a rock on it to ensure a safe journey.

Thanks for the explanation and for the hint where to find what it is.

Envelope holder?

Heh, I never thought of trying to use it as an envelope holder! Let's see... no, the spacing between the two "slots" is too small for either of the standard sizes of US letter envelopes, even when you try to put them in vertically.

I actually don't know exactly what it's supposed to be. They were handed out as souvenirs (along with T-shirts, cups, etc.) when the light-rail line opened in Charlotte NC in 2007. Parsons Brinckerhoff was the main design/engineering contractor. So I think it's supposed to be something electrical, maybe from an old-fashioned system, not a modern one. Maybe a fuse holder?

If envelopes are too wide, then my guess is a holder for visiting cards, presumably the ones of the owner.

You may be on to something here! The gap is 92mm wide, and a business card that I have handy is 90mm wide. The holder might accommodate 20 or so of them.

It's a Moon lamp which I am very fond of. It's remarkably convincing, more than can be seen http://c2.staticflickr.com/2/1959/45702212582_4b9fc35d84_c.jpg.
It's a LED lamp and rechargable, and can be found here. ...Hmm, I think I will actually order a bigger one .

My immediate guess is a stone with a hole for a candle.
It's less a "what is" than a "how come". I would have made a joke by taking the other side of the stone as a rebus (Ein-Stein or One-In-Hole) and this one as part of the solution, but it might have disqualified me for double counted pictures. I like this stone for the physics behind it.

Emergency fire starter. The main body is made of magnesium and the inset cylinder is a flint. You use a knife to shave some magnesium filings onto your tinder, then strike it across the flint, producing sparks which ignite the filings.
