Precalculus Review: Texts & Materials

In summary, the speaker is seeking guidance on materials for precalculus review while taking a single variable calculus course. They have a list of available texts, but are open to mixing and matching. The suggested option is to use their friend's precalculus with calculus textbook, which covers all necessary topics.

Dear all, I am looking to refresh my memory as to some material at a precalculus level. At the moment I am traversing a course in single variable calculus but I feel some review would be useful.

The following is a list of materials readily available to me so I would appreciate any guidance you can offer. I have tried to do some research as to some suggested texts but have had trouble narrowing it down beyond the following. I have little issue with mixing/matching as necessary if any text has a superior presentation of certain topics.

Algebra and Trigonometry by Axler.
Basic Mathematics by Lang.
Principles of Mathematics by Allendoefer and Oakley.
Calculus 1 with Precalculus by Larson (not seen suggested but a friend has a copy he is willing to give to me so I thought I should list it).
Gelfand Maths Series by Gelfand et al (Algebra, Trig, Functions and Graphs, Method of Coordinates, Sequences, Combinations and Limits; Lines and Curves: A Practical Geometry Handbook).
Geometry by Jacobs.
Elements of Algebra by Euler.
Euclid's Elements by Euclid.

To be honest, just use your friends precalculus with calculus textbook.
It will contain all the algebra and trigonometry that you will need for calculus.

FAQ: Precalculus Review: Texts & Materials

What is precalculus and why is it important?

Precalculus is a branch of mathematics that serves as a preparation for calculus. It covers topics such as algebra, trigonometry, and functions. It is important because it builds the necessary foundation for students to understand and succeed in calculus, which is used in many fields such as engineering, physics, and economics.

What are some common texts and materials used for precalculus review?

Some common texts and materials used for precalculus review include textbooks, online resources, practice problems, and study guides. Examples of textbooks include "Precalculus: Mathematics for Calculus" by James Stewart and "Precalculus with Limits" by Ron Larson.

How can I effectively review precalculus concepts?

One effective way to review precalculus concepts is to practice solving problems. This can help reinforce understanding of key concepts and identify areas that need more review. It is also helpful to use study guides or review sheets to focus on specific topics and to seek help from a tutor or teacher if needed.

What are some important topics to review in precalculus?

Some important topics to review in precalculus include algebraic equations and functions, trigonometry, logarithms, and exponential functions. It is also important to have a strong understanding of graphing and the properties of different types of functions.

How can I use technology to aid in precalculus review?

There are many online resources and apps that can aid in precalculus review. These include graphing calculators, online practice problems, and interactive tutorials. It is important to use technology as a supplement to traditional studying methods and not rely on it completely.
