Quantum Based Explanations For Consciousness

In summary, the conversation was about exploring consciousness from a scientific perspective through videos recommended by Stuart Hameroff and Amit Goswami. The Penrose video was praised for its excellent planning and execution, despite the speaker's disposition. However, a forum member retracted the idea of quantum phenomenon playing a role in consciousness, stating that there is no evidence for it. The topic has been discussed extensively before and the thread was closed.

Recently I've watched some riveting vids where conciousness is explored from a scientific perspective. Please have a look and comment. The Penrose video is long, but amazingly planned and executed, regardless of the guys disposistion...
Stuart Hameroff: Link removed (solid in scientific approach)
Amit Goswami: Link removed (out there, but captivating)
Penrose: Link removed quantum ( a masterpiece of real world facts melded with of the chart postulations)

Welcome to PF! This has been discussed to death before on this forum. There is absolutely no evidence for quantum phenomenon to play a role in consciousness any more than the standard effects of chemistry. [Retracted]. Feel free to search the forums for previous discussions on this, thread closed.

Related to Quantum Based Explanations For Consciousness

1. What is the theory of quantum-based explanations for consciousness?

The theory of quantum-based explanations for consciousness suggests that the fundamental building blocks of the universe, at the subatomic level, play a vital role in the emergence of consciousness. It proposes that consciousness arises from the interaction of quantum processes within the brain.

2. How does quantum mechanics relate to consciousness?

Quantum mechanics is a branch of physics that studies the behavior of particles at the subatomic level. The theory suggests that the principles of quantum mechanics, such as superposition and entanglement, could explain how consciousness emerges from the physical processes in the brain.

3. What evidence supports the theory of quantum-based explanations for consciousness?

There is currently no conclusive evidence to support this theory. Some researchers have found a correlation between certain quantum processes in the brain and conscious experience, but more research is needed to fully understand the relationship between quantum mechanics and consciousness.

4. How does this theory differ from other explanations for consciousness?

One of the key differences between quantum-based explanations and other theories of consciousness is that it does not rely on the classical approach of studying the brain as a purely physical system. Instead, it takes into account the quantum nature of particles and how they may contribute to the emergence of consciousness.

5. What are the implications of this theory for our understanding of consciousness?

If proven to be true, the theory of quantum-based explanations for consciousness could revolutionize our understanding of consciousness and the nature of reality. It may also have implications for fields such as neuroscience, psychology, and artificial intelligence, as well as lead to new technologies and treatments for neurological disorders.
