Question Regarding Time Passage @ Light Speed

In summary, Dobson, who is traveling at 0.96 times the speed of light, travels for 7 years away from Earth and then turns back at half the speed. Meanwhile, Anthony stays stationary on Earth. When Dobson returns, there is a difference in age between the two twins due to time dilation. The exact age difference can be calculated using the equation for time dilation.

Homework Statement

"Anthony and Dobson are twins. Dobson travels in a straight line away from Earth for 7 years according to his time at 0.96 times the speed of light. After 7 years he turns back and travels back to Earth at half the speed. Meanwhile, Anthony was waiting stationary on Earth. When Dobson gets back, what is the age difference in years between Anthony and Dobson ?"

The Attempt at a Solution

None =\ very much confused on this extra credit question.

A couple bucks via PayPal if anyone can help me figure this out. I don't want just an answer, but help understanding the math behind the answer.

Ever heard of time dilation?

I am familiar with the concept but as far as the math behind it, I'm completely clueless. Been reading everything I could get my hands on, it's making me feel real stupid >.<

FAQ: Question Regarding Time Passage @ Light Speed

How does time passage change at light speed?

According to Einstein's theory of relativity, time is relative and can be affected by the speed of an object. As an object approaches the speed of light, time slows down for that object. This means that time passage is slower for an object traveling at light speed compared to a stationary observer.

Can time passage be reversed at light speed?

No, time passage cannot be reversed at light speed. While time does slow down for an object traveling at light speed, it does not stop or reverse. Time reversal is not possible according to the laws of physics.

How does gravity affect time passage at light speed?

Gravity can also affect time passage at light speed. In areas with strong gravitational fields, time will pass slower compared to areas with weaker gravitational fields. This is known as gravitational time dilation and is another concept of Einstein's theory of relativity.

Is it possible for humans to experience time passage at light speed?

No, it is not possible for humans to experience time passage at light speed. The speed of light is incredibly fast, and according to the laws of physics, it is impossible for any object with mass to reach or exceed the speed of light.

How does the theory of time dilation relate to time passage at light speed?

The theory of time dilation states that time is not constant and can be affected by factors such as speed and gravity. Time passage at light speed is an example of this theory, as an object traveling at light speed will experience a slower passage of time compared to a stationary observer. This concept has been proven through experiments and is a fundamental principle of modern physics.
