    Line Point
In summary, the given point P is seven units from a given straight line. The number of points that are 3 units from the line and also 10 units from point P is three. This can be determined by drawing the line l and point P, and finding the intersects of the locus of all points with fixed distance to the line and the points with fixed distance to point P.

Homework Statement

A given point P is seven units from a given straight line. The number of points that are 3 units from the line and also 10 units from point P is: 1, 2, 3, or 4?

Maybe you can draw it? Draw the line l and the point P.
What does the locus of all points with fixed distance to the line look like?
And all the points with fixed distance to the point?

Now find the intersects.

4, is this correct?

That's not what I would get but I may be interpreting the question differently than you. How did you get 4?

Actually I think it should be three. Two points to the side of the main point and one straight across.

Yes that's what I'm getting as well.

FAQ: Questions: How Far from Point P is a Given Line?

What is the equation for finding the distance from a point to a line?

The distance from a point to a line can be found using the formula d = |ax + by + c| / √(a^2 + b^2), where (x, y) is the given point and ax + by + c = 0 is the equation of the line.

How do you find the coordinates of the closest point on a line from a given point?

To find the closest point on a line from a given point, first find the equation of the line. Then, using the formula (x1, y1) = (-ab(a^2 + b^2), -bc(a^2 + b^2)) and plugging in the values of a, b, and c from the line equation, you can find the coordinates of the closest point.

Can the distance from a point to a line be negative?

No, the distance from a point to a line is always a positive value. This is because the absolute value of the line equation is used in the formula to calculate the distance.

How does the slope of the line affect the distance from a point to the line?

The slope of the line does not directly affect the distance from a point to the line. However, the distance will be greater if the line is steeper (has a larger slope) and smaller if the line is less steep (has a smaller slope).

Is it possible for a point to be equidistant from two different lines?

Yes, it is possible for a point to be equidistant from two different lines. This happens when the two lines are parallel and the given point is located on the line that is equidistant from both lines.
