In summary, the conversation is about a student who is considering asking for a re-grade on an exam due to careless mistakes that resulted in no partial credit. The student is hesitant to ask because they don't want to come off as rude or too focused on getting every point. However, the professor has already stated in the syllabus that it is okay to question grading errors. The conversation also includes a note about the importance of addressing grading concerns early on in the term. The student plans to ask the professor during office hours about their exam grade.

The TAs grade our exams, and we're supposed to get partial credit if we use the correct set up but somewhere make a careless mistake, thus getting the wrong answer. I started with the right equations but left out a decimal about half-way through, and I got no partial credit. I also left off a negative sign in a different problem when calculating, but it was written in my work.

Would it be unreasonable to ask for a re-grade? The professor said in the syllabus that if we find any errors in the grading to tell him, so I'm thinking it is okay...I just don't want to come off as rude or one of those people who fights for every point. I feel especially awkward about asking since there are two errors, but it would raise my final grade about 5 points.

Uh, yes, you are well within your rights. Even the TA who did the grading will probably appreciate it. I grade, and it's the most tedious, thankless task. Vigilance on the part of the students keeps you honest.

Note: As you state, the professor already said it's okay to question the grade a bit... and (in my opinion) it's also MUCH better to question the grade and scrabble for points now as opposed to at the end of the term. --- In fact, in my syllabus, I state that all questions regarding grading on a midterm must be done within a week of the exam's return to students -- since that keeps the grading/scoring procedures fresh in my mind (since I do all my own grading at this time).

I understand the importance of accuracy and precision in grading exams. However, I also recognize that mistakes can happen, and it is reasonable to ask for partial credit when a student has shown understanding of the concepts but made a careless error. The professor has explicitly stated in the syllabus that students can bring any grading errors to their attention, so it is within your right to ask for a re-grade.

I would suggest approaching the professor in a respectful and professional manner, explaining the specific errors you have identified and providing evidence of your understanding of the material. It is important to not come across as rude or demanding, but rather as a student who is seeking to understand their grade and improve their understanding of the material.

In this situation, it is understandable to feel awkward about asking for a re-grade for multiple errors. However, it is important to remember that your grades are a reflection of your understanding and hard work, and it is important to advocate for yourself when necessary. I would recommend discussing this with the professor and seeing if they are willing to review your exam for partial credit.

FAQ: Re-grading Exams: Is Asking for Partial Credit Reasonable?

What is the purpose of re-grading exams?

The purpose of re-grading exams is to allow students the opportunity to request a review of their exam if they feel that their grade does not accurately reflect their understanding of the material. This can include requesting partial credit for certain questions that were marked incorrect.

Is it reasonable to ask for partial credit when re-grading an exam?

Yes, it is reasonable to ask for partial credit when re-grading an exam. This allows for a fair evaluation of a student's understanding of the material and takes into account any mistakes or misunderstandings they may have had during the exam.

How is partial credit determined when re-grading an exam?

Partial credit is typically determined by the instructor or grader based on the student's work and understanding of the question. This can include giving credit for showing work, providing a correct formula, or demonstrating some understanding of the concept, even if the final answer is incorrect.

Are there any guidelines for requesting a re-grade of an exam?

Yes, there may be specific guidelines set by the instructor or institution for requesting a re-grade of an exam. These may include a specific time frame for submitting a request and a limit on the number of questions that can be re-graded. It is important to follow these guidelines to ensure a fair and timely review of the exam.

Can re-grading an exam result in a lower grade?

Yes, it is possible for re-grading an exam to result in a lower grade. This may happen if the initial grade was too generous and the re-grading reveals that the student did not have a strong understanding of the material. However, it is also possible for the grade to remain the same or even increase after a re-grade, depending on the individual circumstances of the exam and the student's performance.
