In summary, hundreds of sex toys were hung from power lines in Portland, Oregon. Some people think this is a message, while others think it's just funny.

...a global protest against oil dependency.

I think it's a mistake to try and make something like this seem like a serious protest against anything. Naked bike riding is just silly. It would work, I think, if it were merely a pro-bicycle fest intended to raise awareness of this alternate means of transportation.

The article says more than 8000 people participated in 2013. All that suggests to me is that bicycling is a particularly attractive activity to exhibitionists. I really don't get an anti-oil dependency vibe from naked cycling.

I would like to be selling sun screen and cold drinks tomorrow, it's 93 downtown and this in my covered patio.

It's crazy hot up here in Olympia too, spook. And no rain in the forecast, except for possible thundershowers on Sunday - not those splendid, long, drizzly days I love.

And just in time for July 4, oh boy :nb)!

You go to the bike ride and this is what your see.

7,111 °F ?

Sounds about right.

ps. And to all you folk from warmer climates, who think we're whining? Well, you can shut the hell up. You signed up for where you live. We did not. It is not supposed to be this hot here. My AC has been on PowerRanger setting for 4 days now, 24/7.

No need for the stove-top, a little non-stick spray on the hood of the car works great. The heat is great, I've got a co-worker who's training for a 100 mile run in Utah and I'm in training for a week in Reno/Vegas. I might actually be able to walk outside the Casino during the day for 5 minutes.

Our Unipiper joked the other day, that he can now admit that he's been high for some time.

Um... I've been hanging around stoners my whole life. I'm pretty sure, they would fall down, just thinking about a uni-cycle.

Drugs are bad, mmm.kay...

I wonder if he can perform his act with the current burn ban? Is he a legal firework?
http://www.oregonlive.com/portland/index.ssf/2015/07/legal_fireworks_ok_under_portl.html
Illegal fireworks in Oregon include anything that flies, explodes, or travels more than six feet on the ground or one foot into the air.

Last year I shopped at the stands near Rochester WA on Indian land. Plenty of good stuff there.

For the 'smoker' a little lesson in marijuana etiquette:
Pot at the backyard bbq

Talk to the host. Hoping to smoke at your neighbor's cookout? Don't just break out a joint while standing by the grill. Broach the subject when you RSVP or approach the host when you arrive. Keep your request short and to the point.

"It doesn't have to be hard to ask, 'Is it OK if we smoke a joint?'" said Belville, a longtime and frequent consumer who admits he's rarely in social situations where marijuana use isn't welcome.
...
Avoid walking into a party only with dried flowers and rolling papers, which West compared to handing over an unsliced watermelon. It creates more work for the host and hostess.
...
"Legalization of marijuana," he said, "doesn't give you the right to be rude."

According to the blog, the woman said she and some friends acquired more than 10,000 sex toys that were deemed not fit for sale because of a manufacturing flaw. So she thought what better to do then hang them in public view.

"It was just a fun, hilarious thing to do," the woman is quoted as saying. "... I'm still laughing about this."

My friend had one of "those" show up in her front yard, about 25 years ago, on the end of a stick, "growing" out her garden.
We are all still laughing about it. :)

Friend; "Did you do that!?"
Om; "No. But that's pretty funny."
Friend; "I don't think so. Do you want it?"
Om; "Um... Sure! We can throw it at eat other, at OCF!"

The heat is really driving out the weird in the city.

http://www.oregonlive.com/portland/...lad_suspect_accus.html#incart_related_stories
A 37-year-old woman accused of snooping on porches of homes in Portland dressed in a pink bikini top and black shorts has been indicted on a burglary allegation.

Lisa Straine-Rock was arrested July 9 after police responded to an alarm in the 1700 block of Northeast Thompson Street. An intruder had opened the home's French doors about six inches, according to police.

No better place to be when it's so hot out.

Coincidentally, the mayor of the city, was meeting with the pope last week, regarding, climate change?

The Oregonian: 'Charlie Hales: Cities can lead fight against climate change'
JULY 22, 2015 — Following a conference call Mayor Hales hosted from Rome, The Oregonian writes about the mayor's experience at the Vatican. An excerpt: "'Street by street, light-rail line by light -ail line, solar array by solar array, that's how change actually happens,' Hales said.

"Hales said Portland is a 'model and a leader in this movement,' but can still do hundreds of things to fight climate change, such as burn different fuels, build different buildings and give residents more choices in how to get to work.

"Some of those ideas could already be available in other cities, he said, adding: 'There's nothing wrong with a virtuous contest among cities of who can do a better job of saving the planet.'"
https://www.portlandoregon.gov/mayor/article/538257

I seem to recall that the mayor agreed with the protesters, hence, the lack of their demise.

Portland has had some pretty cool mayors over the decades.

I live in the Tacoma, Wa area, and we still haven't had any rain since Lisab's post, save one drizzle about 4 days ago. The projection is 90+ again through the weekend. Thankfully, I broke down this year and bought 2 Fridgitaire room air conditioners this summer. Now I don't give a rip how hot it gets.:-p

You, can go, to H, E, double toothpicks...

I have failed, in my attempt, to join the PF AC repair club for men... :oldgrumpy:

The compressor still works, but the combo hot/cold fan motor is, um, [trying not to use curse words...] not functioning...
It's too hot to think, so anyone in a cooler climate that wants to make a guess as to why it isn't working, is welcome.

I'm going to the store.

I feel your pain.
The dual RUN capacitor might be bad on the fan side.
I'm running the workshop AC from the backyard solar, more sun means more juice for the cooling.

The battery bank is picking up the slack and the power cube display is RED for total system draw.

With solar you can be cool and GREEN.

hmmmm... I cooked a hamburger with the sun yesterday.
The hood of my car was not getting hot enough, so I got out about 30 AOL disks and laid them out in my driveway.
The stand was an inverted tomato cage, held down with two patio paver bricks.

Final hamburger temperature was 147°F.
It took about two hours.

That is t0o wild!

Bad news, the Flugtag fun has been shutdown early. Too many people blocking the river with no ice-breaker to clear them out.

http://koin.com/2015/08/13/possible-meteor-sparks-fire-on-se-lawn/
However, Dick Pugh with Cascadia Meteorite Laboratory (CML) at Portland State University tells KOIN that meteorites don’t start fires when they impact the ground, and if one does hit, it would have a “very obvious impact zone.”

I heard a really big boom in the sky this morning near the house, maybe that was another meteorite. :nb)

Maybe I should water the front lawn today.

The 22-year-old National Guardsman from Rosenburg, Oregan, and Mr Stone charged the unidentified 26-year-old man, believed to be of Moroccan origin, down the narrow carriage.

"Then I grabbed the AK (assault rifle), which was at his feet, and started muzzle thumping him in the head with it," Mr Skarlatos added.

That's a great story - sure could have been bad. I read an eyewitness saying that as the perp was being subdued, he kept yelling, "Give me back my gun!" Yeah dude, that ain't happening any time soon.

Although wildfires in the region are not uncommon, the wind bringing this much smoke into the city is so rare, that people have been calling 911.

Several fire departments around the region, including Portland Fire and Rescue, said citizens were calling 911 to report smoke in the area. They encourage people to only call 911 if they see fire or smoke coming from a specific source.

The closest fire, at this time, is about 70 miles away.

It took me a while to find a "fire locator" map, so I thought I'd share it: Northwest Fire Locations

We had poor air quality due to the smoke. I could barely see the hills about 5 miles south from the house.

I took this 'Day After' photo of the smoke Saturday from an abandoned Dog track.
