Shear Pin Stress Concentration V-Notch vs. U shape grooved in bending

In summary, the conversation is about finding a resource that compares the stress risers in a shear pin with a V-notch groove to those with a rounded groove. The person has searched for charts and tables but has only found information on round circular bars with rounded grooves in bending. The suggested resource is a reference from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, but it only covers V-notch in torsion and not bending. Another possible resource is Petersen's Stress Concentration Factors, which is referenced in an attachment.

Can someone link a website or attach a picture of a chart distinguishing the differences between the stress risers in a shear pin (round circular shaft) with a V-notch groove versus if it was a rounded groove. I have been looking but can only find charts, tables and graphs for round circular bars with rounded grooves in beninding.

Thanks so much for any help you can provide!

I had already seen this reference but unfortunately it only provides regerence to V-notch in torsion, but not bending.

The only other reference is Petersen's Stress Concentration Factors, Ref. 6.1 from the attachment.

FAQ: Shear Pin Stress Concentration V-Notch vs. U shape grooved in bending

1. What is shear pin stress concentration?

Shear pin stress concentration is a phenomenon that occurs when a load is applied to a material with a discontinuity, such as a notch or groove. This results in a higher stress concentration at the point of the discontinuity, which can lead to failure of the material.

2. What is the difference between a V-notch and a U-shaped groove in terms of shear pin stress concentration?

The main difference between a V-notch and a U-shaped groove is the shape of the discontinuity. A V-notch has a sharp, triangular shape, while a U-shaped groove has a curved, more gradual shape. This difference in shape can affect the distribution of stress and the severity of the stress concentration.

3. Which shape, V-notch or U-shaped groove, is more prone to stress concentration in bending?

In general, a V-notch is more prone to stress concentration in bending compared to a U-shaped groove. This is because the sharp corners of the V-notch create a more abrupt change in stress, leading to a higher concentration of stress at the point of the notch.

4. How does the depth of the V-notch or U-shaped groove affect the stress concentration?

The depth of the V-notch or U-shaped groove can greatly affect the severity of stress concentration. A deeper notch or groove will result in a higher stress concentration, as there is a larger change in stress between the area with the discontinuity and the area without the discontinuity.

5. What are some ways to reduce shear pin stress concentration in bending?

One way to reduce shear pin stress concentration is by using a smoother, more gradual shape for the notch or groove, such as a U-shaped groove. Additionally, increasing the radius of the notch or groove can help distribute stress more evenly. Another method is to use materials with higher ductility, which can better withstand stress concentrations. Finally, proper design and placement of the notch or groove can also help minimize stress concentration.
