In summary, shell taxonomy is the scientific classification and categorization of different types of shells based on their physical characteristics and genetic relationships. It is important to learn Latin names for shells as it allows scientists to communicate and exchange information without any confusion and helps us understand their relationships and evolution. Scientists identify shells by using various methods such as physical features, specialized tools, and chemical tests. There are many online resources for learning shell taxonomy, including websites, databases, and online courses. To get involved in shell taxonomy, you can join a local conchological society, attend conferences and workshops, volunteer at a natural history museum or research institution, or participate in citizen science projects.

At school we've been given the identification of MANY shells as an assignement but we can't find good enough information in our poor books. Hence I'd like to know where I could find a good website about shells with ways to identify them (pictures if possible) and their full latin name (genre/species). I gave it a try on google but I can't find any good site.

I don't know if there are any good websites, but you probably can find what you need by checking the library for field guides to shellfish.

There are several websites that can help you with your shell identification assignment. One of the most comprehensive and reliable resources is the website of the National Shell Museum (https://www.shellmuseum.org/). They have a section specifically dedicated to shell identification, where you can search for shells by their common or scientific names. They also have high-quality images of the shells, which can aid in your identification process.

Another great website is Conchology, Inc. (https://www.conchology.be/), which has a vast database of shell species with detailed information and images. You can search for shells by their scientific names or browse through different genera and families.

For a more interactive experience, you can also check out the website of the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History (https://naturalhistory.si.edu/research/anthropology/collections/online-collections-search). They have a virtual collection of shells where you can view high-resolution images and filter your search by taxonomy, location, and other criteria.

Lastly, you can also consider downloading a shell identification app, such as "Seashells of the World" or "iSeashells." These apps have a vast database of shells with detailed information and images, and you can even take a picture of a shell and use it to identify the species.

I hope these resources will help you in your assignment. Good luck!
