Hello I have recently applied for college and I put down mechanical engineering as my number 1. I ament that good at maths in fact I struggle with it, but I am very good at solid works and I love working with metals. I still don't know if mechanical engineering is mainly designing or if there is any practical side to it because I would rather the practical side! Could anyone help?

I think you will enjoy Mech Engineering. It is very practical although some of things you learn may never be used in your profession but still you will have had exposure to them and that is a good thing.

Keep working on your math it's definitely an important aspect to being good at Mech Engineering.

FAQ: Should I do mechanical engineering?

Should I do mechanical engineering?

This is a common question for students considering a career in engineering. Ultimately, the decision to pursue mechanical engineering should be based on your interests, skills, and goals. Mechanical engineering is a broad field that involves designing, building, and maintaining mechanical systems. If you enjoy problem-solving, working with your hands, and have a strong foundation in math and science, mechanical engineering may be a good fit for you.

What skills do I need for mechanical engineering?

In addition to a strong foundation in math and science, mechanical engineers also need to have strong analytical and problem-solving skills. They should also possess good communication and teamwork skills, as they often work in multidisciplinary teams. Technical skills, such as computer-aided design (CAD) and computer-aided engineering (CAE), are also important for mechanical engineers.

What are the job prospects for mechanical engineers?

The job outlook for mechanical engineers is positive, with a projected job growth of 4% from 2019 to 2029, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Mechanical engineers are needed in a variety of industries, including manufacturing, automotive, aerospace, and energy. With the increasing demand for sustainable and energy-efficient solutions, there is a growing need for mechanical engineers in the renewable energy sector as well.

What are the typical job responsibilities of a mechanical engineer?

Mechanical engineers are responsible for designing, building, and maintaining mechanical systems and machines. This can include everything from developing new products and prototypes to improving existing systems. They also conduct research, analyze data, and use computer simulations to test and optimize designs. In addition, mechanical engineers may also be involved in project management, quality control, and technical writing.

What are the potential career paths for mechanical engineers?

The field of mechanical engineering offers a wide range of career opportunities. Some mechanical engineers work in traditional industries such as manufacturing and automotive, while others may specialize in emerging fields such as robotics, nanotechnology, or renewable energy.
