In summary, SM/SC (silt modification/silt conditioning) is an effective material for use as fill. It offers various benefits, such as improving stability, strength, and permeability of soil, reducing settlement, and increasing load-bearing capacity. It can be used in different types of soil and is considered environmentally friendly. SM/SC is typically applied by mixing it with existing soil, and the amount needed varies depending on the project and soil conditions. Consultation with a geotechnical engineer is recommended for proper application.

Hey guys just classified some soil according to USCS.
Came up with either SM or SC.

Been searching for about an hour on them but haven't stumbled upon anything that states whether they are good as a fill material or not.

Any ideas?

Welcome to PF.
It depends entirely on what you are going to put on top of the fill.

FAQ: SM/SC any good as fill Material?

Is SM/SC effective as fill material?

Yes, SM/SC (silt modification/silt conditioning) is an effective material for use as fill. It has been proven to improve the stability, strength, and permeability of soil, making it a desirable choice for fill material in various construction projects.

What are the benefits of using SM/SC as fill material?

The use of SM/SC as fill material offers several benefits. It can improve the bearing capacity of soil, reduce settlement, and increase the load-bearing capacity of foundations. It also helps with erosion control and reduces the risk of liquefaction in earthquake-prone areas.

Can SM/SC be used in all types of soil?

Yes, SM/SC can be used in various types of soil, including clay, silt, and sand. It is especially beneficial for soils with a high silt content, as it helps to stabilize and improve their properties.

Is SM/SC environmentally friendly?

Yes, SM/SC is considered to be an environmentally friendly material. It is made from natural materials and does not contain any harmful chemicals. Its use can also help to reduce erosion and improve the overall health of the soil.

How is SM/SC applied as fill material?

SM/SC is typically applied by mixing it with the existing soil. This can be done through mechanical mixing or tilling. The amount of SM/SC needed will depend on the specific project and soil conditions, and it is best to consult with a geotechnical engineer for proper application.
