In summary, renowned scientist Stephen Hawking, known for his book "A Brief History of Time", is currently in the hospital and is reported to be very ill. He has achieved international fame despite being wheelchair-bound and communicating through a voice synthesiser due to motor neurone disease. Hawking has also made headlines for his bet against the discovery of the Higgs boson. However, recent reports suggest that he is doing better and we wish him and his family well.

Hawking "very ill"

LONDON (AFP) — Scientist Stephen Hawking, the author of "A Brief History Of Time", is "very ill" in hospital, Cambridge University said Monday.

Hawking, 67, has achieved international fame despite being wheelchair-bound because of motor neurone disease and having to communicate through a voice synthesiser.

"Professor Hawking is very ill," said a spokesman for the university, adding that the academic had been taken to hospital in the city by ambulance...

Best wishes to him and his family.

Sad, but not surprising news.

Hope he lives long enough to hear the discovery of the Higgs boson.

That is good news. The reports yesterday sounded pretty grim.

That IS good news. Anybody that suffers from respiratory illnesses can tell you that it can be quite exhausting to cough enough to clear mucus from airways, so a chest infection for a man in Hawking's condition could be big trouble. My wife's cousin is married to a respiratory therapist, and her toughest challenges involve people who are physically impaired or who suffer from paralysis or other conditions that make productive coughing difficult or impossible.

FAQ: Stephen Hawking "Very Ill" in Hospital

1. What is the current condition of Stephen Hawking?

As of April 2018, Stephen Hawking was in very ill condition and was admitted to the hospital for further treatment.

2. What caused Stephen Hawking's illness?

Stephen Hawking suffered from a rare motor neuron disease called amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), also known as Lou Gehrig's disease. This progressive disease affects nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord, leading to muscle weakness and eventually paralysis.

3. What is the prognosis for Stephen Hawking's condition?

The prognosis for ALS is generally poor, with most patients surviving only 3-5 years after diagnosis. However, Stephen Hawking has defied the odds and lived with the disease for over 50 years, thanks to advancements in medical treatment and technology.

4. How has Stephen Hawking's illness affected his work?

Despite his illness, Stephen Hawking continued to make groundbreaking contributions to the fields of physics and cosmology. He used a computerized speech synthesizer and specialized wheelchair to communicate and travel, allowing him to continue his work and inspire countless others with his brilliance.

5. What can we learn from Stephen Hawking's illness?

Stephen Hawking's illness has taught us about the resilience of the human spirit and the power of perseverance in the face of adversity. He has also brought attention to the need for continued research and support for those living with ALS and other disabilities.
