Synthetic pathways to produce the provided complex

In summary, the gradual addition of ##NH_{3(aq)}## to ##[CuCl_4]^{2-}_{(aq)}## results in the formation of ##[Cu(H_2O)_6]^{2+}_{(aq)}##, ##Cu(OH)_{2(aq)}## and ##[Cu(NH_3)_4(H_2O)_2]^{2+}_{(aq)}## through a series of reactions.

Question
Describe the color changes that occur when ##NH_{3(aq)}## is gradually added, with stirring to ##[CuCl_4]^{2-}_{(aq)}## until the ##NH_{3(aq)}## is in excess.
Identify the three compounds or ions responsible for the new colors.

Now the marking scheme shows that somehow ##[Cu(H_2O)_6]^{2+}_{(aq)}##,##Cu(OH)_{2(aq)}## and ##[Cu(NH_3)_4(H_2O)_2]^{2+}_{(aq)}## gets produced.
The only reaction I am taught concerning ##[CuCl_4]^{2-}_{(aq)}## and ##NH_{3(aq)}## is
##[CuCl_4]^{2-}_{(aq)}## + ##NH_{3(aq)}## (in excess) ----->##[Cu(NH_3)_4(H_2O)_2]^{2+}_{(aq)}##

Can someone tell me a reaction pathway in which all these three ions are achieved?

AnswerThe reaction pathway for the color changes when ##NH_{3(aq)}## is gradually added to ##[CuCl_4]^{2-}_{(aq)}## until the ##NH_{3(aq)}## is in excess is as follows:1. ##[CuCl_4]^{2-}_{(aq)}## + 2H_2O <=> ##[Cu(H_2O)_6]^{2+}_{(aq)}## + 4Cl^-2. ##[Cu(H_2O)_6]^{2+}_{(aq)}## + 2NH_3 <=> ##[Cu(NH_3)_4(H_2O)_2]^{2+}_{(aq)}## + 2H_2O3. ##[Cu(H_2O)_6]^{2+}_{(aq)}## + OH^- <=> ##Cu(OH)_{2(aq)}## + 6H_2OThe three compounds/ions responsible for the new colors are ##[Cu(H_2O)_6]^{2+}_{(aq)}##, ##Cu(OH)_{2(aq)}## and ##[Cu(NH_3)_4(H_2O)_2]^{2+}_{(aq)}##.

FAQ: Synthetic pathways to produce the provided complex

What is a synthetic pathway?

A synthetic pathway is a series of chemical reactions that are used to produce a specific compound or complex molecule. It involves the use of different starting materials, reagents, and reaction conditions to achieve the desired product.

Why is it important to have synthetic pathways for complex molecules?

Synthetic pathways allow scientists to create complex molecules that are not found in nature, or are difficult or impossible to obtain through natural sources. This can lead to the development of new materials, medicines, and other useful substances.

How do scientists determine the best synthetic pathway for a specific complex?

Scientists use their knowledge of organic chemistry and chemical reactions to design and optimize synthetic pathways. They also rely on computer modeling and experiments to test and refine their methods.

What are some challenges that scientists face when developing synthetic pathways?

Some challenges include finding the most efficient and cost-effective reactions, minimizing unwanted side reactions, and ensuring the safety of the process. Additionally, some complex molecules may require multiple synthetic pathways to produce, making the process more complicated.

Can synthetic pathways be used to produce any type of complex molecule?

In theory, yes. However, some complex molecules may be too unstable or difficult to produce through synthetic pathways. Additionally, the cost and complexity of the process may make it impractical for some molecules.
