In summary, there are four scan modes for tandem MS: Product ion, Precursor ion, Neutral loss scan mode, and MRM. In MRM, ions are selected in MS1 and fragmented in the collision cell, and the daughter ions are then selected in MS2 and detected. The resulting graph shows intensity versus time, which refers to the retention time on the column. This means that different m/z ratios selected by the quadrupole will have their own corresponding graphs.

Homework Statement

There are four scan modes for tandem MS: Product ion, Precursor ion, Neutral loss scan mode and MRM.
e.g. In MRM, the result of graph is Intensity versus time, but NOT versus m/z.
What does the "time" in the graph refers to?

Homework Equations

The Attempt at a Solution

For MRM, ions are selected in MS1 and fragmented in collision cell. The daughter ions then selected in MS2 and go to the detector.
The result of graph should be intensity versus m/z. But it is against time. Does it means it the selected m/z in MS2 undergo LC after that? Or the time is the detection time?

The time is the retention time on the column. You should have multiple graphs corresponding to the different m/z ratios selected by your quadrupole.

FAQ: Tandem MS: What Does Time in MRM Graph Refer To?

What is tandem mass spectrometry (Tandem MS)?

Tandem mass spectrometry (Tandem MS) is a powerful analytical technique used in the field of mass spectrometry that involves two consecutive stages of mass spectrometry to obtain more detailed information about a sample.

How does Tandem MS work?

In Tandem MS, the first stage involves separating and ionizing molecules in a sample to produce ions. These ions are then selected and fragmented in the second stage, and the resulting fragments are analyzed to determine the molecular structure and composition of the sample.

What does the time in the MRM graph refer to?

The time in the MRM (Multiple Reaction Monitoring) graph refers to the retention time of the analyte, which is the time taken for the analyte to travel through the column in the mass spectrometer. This time is used to identify and quantify the analyte in the sample.

How is Tandem MS used in research?

Tandem MS is used in various research fields, such as proteomics, metabolomics, and pharmaceutical analysis, to identify and quantify complex molecular structures in a sample. It is also used in biomarker discovery and drug development processes.

What are the advantages of using Tandem MS?

Tandem MS has several advantages, including high sensitivity, high selectivity, and the ability to analyze complex mixtures. It also allows for the detection and quantification of low abundance molecules and can provide structural information about the molecules in a sample.
