In summary, the speaker has an interesting physics thought experiment involving both SR and QM that they believe has not been posed before. They are unsure of the appropriate forum to share it in and are concerned about getting warned or banned as it is not a proven theory but rather a mental exercise. They are advised to submit it to Independent Research, where they can receive help fleshing out their thoughts and discuss ideas that meet basic criteria.

I have what I believe to be an interesting physics thought experiment involving both SR and QM. I don't believe it's been posed before, but I could be wrong. What would be the appropriate forum to put this in? It doesn't fit under "Independent Research" as it's not a formal paper. I don't want to get warned/banned since my thought experiment isn't all proven theory, just a mental excercise that I wanted viewpoints on.

Hi Trashman, you should submit it to IR. The instructions will help you flesh out your thoughts. IR is not really for formal papers, it's mostly to discuss ideas, but the ideas must meet basic criteria.

FAQ: Thought Experiments: Discussing Physics SR & QM Ideas

What is a thought experiment?

A thought experiment is a mental exercise or hypothetical scenario used to explore and test ideas and concepts in physics and other fields. It involves imagining a situation or scenario and reasoning through it to better understand a concept or theory.

How are thought experiments used in physics?

Thought experiments are used in physics to explore and test ideas that cannot be easily tested through traditional experiments. They allow scientists to think about and discuss complex concepts and theories without the limitations of physical equipment or real-world constraints.

Can thought experiments provide evidence for or against a theory?

Thought experiments cannot provide direct evidence for or against a theory, as they are not based on physical experiments or observations. However, they can help scientists better understand and refine theories, and can serve as a starting point for further research and experimentation.

Are thought experiments only used in theoretical physics?

No, thought experiments are not limited to theoretical physics. They can be used in any field of science to explore and test ideas and theories. However, they are particularly useful in fields like physics, where certain concepts and phenomena may be difficult or impossible to directly observe or experiment with.

Are thought experiments considered valid in the scientific community?

Yes, thought experiments are considered valid in the scientific community as they provide a valuable tool for exploring and discussing complex concepts and theories. However, they are not considered a replacement for traditional experiments and observations, but rather a supplement to them.
