I recently finished a military career after 20 years and am looking for a new career. Hoping to develope some inspiration on the forum.
I have always been interested in science and technology, but my military experience showed me the practical applications of these fields in real-world situations. I was inspired to pursue a career in science to continue serving my country and make a positive impact through innovation and research.
One of the biggest challenges I faced was adjusting to the different pace and culture of the scientific community. In the military, everything operates on a strict schedule and there is a clear chain of command. In science, things can move slower and collaboration and creativity are key. It took some time for me to adapt to this new environment.
The military taught me valuable skills such as discipline, attention to detail, and problem-solving. These skills are essential in the field of science, where precision and critical thinking are crucial. Additionally, my experience working in diverse teams in the military has helped me collaborate effectively with colleagues from different backgrounds in the scientific community.
My advice would be to take advantage of any education or training opportunities available to you while in the military, as they can help you develop the necessary skills and knowledge for a career in science. Also, network with other veterans who have successfully transitioned into the field and seek mentorship or guidance from them. Lastly, be open-minded and willing to learn, as the transition may require some adjustment.
The PF Forum has been a valuable resource for me in my transition. I have been able to connect with other military veterans who have successfully transitioned into the field of science and learn from their experiences. The forum also provides a platform to ask questions and receive advice from experts in the field, which has been incredibly helpful in my journey.
