In summary, the speaker is seeking advice on which university to attend for an MMath degree, between Warwick University and Durham University. Both universities have a good reputation in math, but the speaker is more familiar with Warwick as they grew up nearby. However, they are also considering Durham due to its smaller and more attractive city, as well as easier access to countryside. Warwick offers more options for courses in physics, computer science, and economics, and also has a STEP offer while Durham does not. The speaker is advised to visit Warwick to see if they like the city of Coventry before making a decision.

I was recently accepted to both for an MMath degree and I'm having a bit of trouble deciding which to go too. I know they both have great courses. School reputation doesn't matter to me so much. Unfortunately I'm an international student as well, so I can't really visit to see exactly how it is. Wondering if anybody could help me out?

Thanks in advance

I don't know very much about either university. Both have a good reputation in maths. Warwick uni is based a large campus just outside Coventry, which is where I grew up. Coventry is ok, it's a medium sized industrial city, and it's close to Birmingham and reasonably close to London where there's a bit more going on. It's not very attractive though, and a few years ago at least the city centre had a reputation for being quite violent. I can't think of anything other than the uni(s) that would attract students to the city. I'm less familiar with Durham, though I have been there a few times as I have cousins living there. I believe the uni is college based, which will give a different feel to the place. The city is much smaller, and also much more attractive than Coventry which suffered from bombing during the second word war and ugly development projects afterwards. Durham has easier access to countryside, though it's also further north so the weather will likely be more rugged.

Warwicks reputation is brilliant for maths, durhams is also good, but not as good afaik. I also know that the course structure at Warwick gives you a lot of options to take from physics and computer science, as well as economics and obviously maths. Also, Warwick also give you a STEP offer if I'm correct and Durham does not, so perhaps your ability to meet that offer should be a consideration.

EDIT: Another thing, you really need to visit Warwick; some people hate Coventry, while others love it.
