So, $a:b$ means the ratio of $a$ to $b$, which can also be written as $\dfrac{a}{b}$. In summary, the result of 6:2(2+1) can be interpreted in two ways, depending on whether the colon symbol represents a division or a ratio. If it represents a division, then the result is 1. If it represents a ratio, then the result is 9. It is important to clarify the meaning of the colon symbol to properly evaluate the expression. Additionally, the symbols $\div$ and $/$ mean the same thing, while the colon symbol $\colon$ indicates a ratio.

Hi chrisgk, welcome to MHB,

Divisions and multiplications have equal precedence and are evaluated from left to right.
So 6:2(2+1) = (6:2)(2+1) = 9.

question ...

Doen't colon ratio symbol, " : ", behave like a vinculum?

i.e. $a:b+c = \dfrac{a}{b+c}$ ?

reason I ask is Wolfram Alpha interprets 4:5+6 as 4/11

That's... unexpected...

Just saying:

It's kind of interesting to see that the OP's question is a perfect match for a meme on the internet...

perfect match?

the result of 6:2(2+1) is 9 or 1?

looks to me the OP posted a colon, $\colon$ , not a division symbol, $\div$

$\div$ and $/$ mean the same thing, the operation of division

$a \div b = a/b = \dfrac{a}{b}$

the colon symbol, $\colon$ , indicates a ratio ... a ratio is a comparison of two values achieved by division.

FAQ: What is the difference between the symbols ÷ / in division?

What is the result of 6:2(2+1)?

The result is 9. In this expression, the parentheses indicate that the operation inside should be performed first. Therefore, 2+1 is evaluated to 3, and then the division of 6 by 2 is performed, resulting in a final answer of 9.

How do you solve 6:2(2+1)?

To solve this expression, follow the order of operations, which states that operations within parentheses should be performed first. So, start by evaluating 2+1 to get 3. Then, perform the division of 6 by 2 to get a final answer of 9.

Why does 6:2(2+1) equal 9?

The answer to this expression is 9 because of the order of operations. The parentheses indicate that the operation inside should be performed first, resulting in 2+1 being evaluated to 3. Then, the division of 6 by 2 is performed, resulting in a final answer of 9.

Can you show the steps to solving 6:2(2+1)?

Yes, the steps to solving this expression are as follows: 1) Evaluate the operation inside the parentheses to get 3. 2) Perform the division of 6 by 2 to get a final answer of 9.

What happens if I don't use parentheses in the expression 6:2(2+1)?

If you do not use parentheses in this expression, the result may be different. Without parentheses, the expression would be evaluated from left to right, meaning the division of 6 by 2 would be performed first, resulting in a final answer of 1. This is because without parentheses, the operation inside the parentheses is not prioritized. It is important to use parentheses to ensure the correct order of operations is followed and to get the correct answer.
