What is the impact of the moon's disappearance on Earth's rotation?

In summary, the moon's presence has gradually slowed down Earth's rotation, with one day lasting only 6 hours before the moon was created. If the moon were to disappear, Earth's spin would continue to slow, but more gradually, as the Sun also contributes to tidal braking, but to a lesser degree. The extent of the Sun's contribution to the current slowing is difficult to determine due to the complex interaction of tides.

What if the moon disappeared??

Homework Statement

I am doing a project answering this question: what if the moon disappeared? I was looking up how the moon was affecting Earth's rotation around its axis and noticed how the moon pulls Earth backward, slowing down Earth's rotation. One of the websites says that one day on Earth used to be six hours before the moon was created, but the moon in its orbit started extending it as it receded away from Earth.

My question is, does this mean that if the moon were to disappear (destroyed by aliens or something) Earth would start spinning faster? (back to 6 hours days?) The website says its impact on Earth would be insignificant because the days are still extended due to tidal braking of the Sun. But wasn't Sun there with Earth before the moon was created? Why wasn't Earth's spin affected by Sun back then and one day only lasted 6 hours? (It will be really helpful if you could also explain to me about solar tidal braking!)

At least learn the difference between 'break' (to smash or damage) and 'brake' (to slow down or retard).

Since this is HW, you must at least try to answer your questions. If their is something you don't understand about the answers you develop, you can ask someone to clarify with what you are having problems. These are the rules for PF.

Yes, the Sun also contributes to Earth's tides, but the effect is weaker than the moon's.
So if the moon were to vanish, the Earth's spin would continue to slow, but more gradually.
As to how much the tidal braking from the Sun contributes to the current slowing, that's a tricky question. Remember that the two effects are sometimes in phase (spring tides) and sometimes out of phase (neap tides). Can you suggest some suitable equations to model that?

FAQ: What is the impact of the moon's disappearance on Earth's rotation?

What would happen to Earth's tides if the moon disappeared?

If the moon disappeared, the tides on Earth would be significantly impacted. The moon's gravitational pull is what causes the tides to rise and fall. Without the moon, the tides would be much smaller and less predictable.

Would there still be lunar eclipses if the moon disappeared?

No, there would not be any more lunar eclipses if the moon disappeared. A lunar eclipse occurs when the Earth, moon, and sun align in a specific way, causing the Earth's shadow to fall on the moon. Without the moon, this alignment would not be possible.

How would the disappearance of the moon affect Earth's rotation?

The moon's gravitational pull actually slows down the Earth's rotation, so if the moon disappeared, the Earth's rotation would speed up. This would result in shorter days and nights.

What would happen to the Earth's climate if the moon disappeared?

The moon plays a crucial role in stabilizing Earth's climate. Its gravitational pull helps to regulate the tilt of Earth's axis, which in turn affects the seasons and temperature distribution on the planet. Without the moon, Earth's climate would become more extreme and unpredictable.

Could life on Earth survive if the moon disappeared?

It is difficult to say for sure, as the disappearance of the moon would have far-reaching consequences for the Earth's environment and ecosystems. However, it is likely that many species would struggle to adapt to the changes in tides, climate, and other factors that the moon helps to regulate.
