So, I was wondering if I could get some ballpark idea of how good I might look to grad schools.

I have a 3.55 overall GPA at a top 10 physics school (don't know what my major GPA is right now).

I have half a year of research experience, and I've worked with a theorist too. I haven't taken the physics GRE yet. (I'm applying next year).

I'm not sure if I should be reaching for the top schools (I doubt I should).

And I'm female, if that counts for anything :D

Any ideas? I have one year before I apply, and wondering what I can do to spruce my application up.

Get more research experience and make sure you know professors who can write really good letters of recommendations.

There are several key components that make a strong grad school application. One of the most important factors is your academic record, including your overall GPA and any relevant major GPAs. A 3.55 GPA at a top 10 physics school is certainly impressive and will be viewed positively by grad schools. However, it's also important to note that GPA is just one aspect of your application and other factors such as research experience and GRE scores will also be considered.

Speaking of research experience, it's great that you have half a year of experience and have worked with a theorist. This shows that you have hands-on experience in your field and have worked with a variety of methodologies. It would be beneficial to continue gaining research experience in the coming year, especially if you can work on a project that aligns with your interests and future grad school plans.

Regarding the physics GRE, it's important to do well on this exam as it is a way for grad schools to gauge your knowledge and potential in the field. Make sure to devote enough time to studying and preparing for this exam before you take it next year.

In terms of which schools to apply to, it's always a good idea to have a mix of reach, target, and safety schools. Reach schools are those that may be more competitive and may be a stretch for your application, while target schools are those that align well with your profile and have a good chance of acceptance. Safety schools are those that you are confident you would be accepted to and would still be satisfied attending. It's important to have a balance and not just reach for the top schools, as they can be very competitive and may not always be the best fit for you.

Lastly, being a female in the field of physics can certainly be a positive factor in your application. Diversity is valued in academia and having a diverse group of students can enhance the learning experience for everyone. However, it's important to note that being female alone may not be enough to secure acceptance to grad school, so it's important to continue working on strengthening your other application components.

In terms of what you can do in the next year to improve your application, focus on excelling in your coursework, gaining more research experience, and preparing for the physics GRE. Additionally, consider reaching out to professors or potential advisors at the schools you are interested in to learn more about their research and to express your interest in their program. This can help you stand out as a candidate and potentially lead to stronger letters
