What was the initial velocity of the ball?

In summary, the ball thrown horizontally from the top of a 25.0 m high cliff will reach the ground in the same amount of time as a ball dropped from the same height. Therefore, the initial velocity of the ball can be calculated using the kinematics equations. The speed of the ball when it hits the ground can also be determined by using these equations, assuming the ball started from rest.

the question: Someone throws a ball horizontally from the top of a 25.0 m high cliff and the ball lands 45.0 m from the base of the cliff

A) What was the initial velocity of the ball?
B) What was its speed wen it hit the ground?

I don't need complete work just a beginning please.

Use the kinematics equations to solve the problem. If its starting from rest what's the initial velocity?

A ball thrown horizontally will reach the ground in the same amount of time as a ball that was simply dropped from the same height.

There is an animation here: (as well as an explanation)

Its not exactly the same but its so close that its negligable.

FAQ: What was the initial velocity of the ball?

What is initial velocity?

Initial velocity is the velocity of an object at the beginning of its motion, which can be measured in meters per second (m/s) or other units of distance divided by time.

How is initial velocity calculated?

Initial velocity can be calculated by dividing the change in an object's displacement (final position - initial position) by the change in time (final time - initial time).

Why is initial velocity important?

Initial velocity is important because it helps determine the trajectory and speed of an object's motion, which is crucial in understanding and predicting its behavior.

Can initial velocity change?

Yes, initial velocity can change if there is an external force acting on the object that causes a change in its velocity over time. For example, if a ball is thrown upwards, its initial velocity will be positive but as it reaches the highest point of its trajectory, its velocity will decrease to zero before becoming negative as it falls back down due to the force of gravity.

How is initial velocity different from average velocity?

Initial velocity is the velocity of an object at the start of its motion, while average velocity is the total displacement of an object divided by the total time it took to move that distance. Initial velocity is a specific value, while average velocity is an average of all the velocities an object has during its motion.
