Hello all,
I'm in Calculus 2, and I was given a problem for bonus points, which I desperately need. It has to do with the best place to sit in a movie theatre. The problem is long, and has a diagram, so I've attached an image of the problem to this post.
I have no real clue where to start with this problem, so a push in the right direction is greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Steve

You can get started using the law of cosines

Do you have a graphing calculator? They want to use either that or something like mathematica or MATLAB on the computer.

FAQ: Where to sit in a theatre bonus problem

What factors should I consider when choosing where to sit in a theatre?

When choosing a seat in a theatre, there are a few factors to consider. First, think about the view. Do you want to be close to the stage or have a wider view of the entire production? Next, consider the sound. Do you prefer to be closer to the speakers for a more immersive experience or farther away for a more balanced sound? Lastly, think about your comfort. Do you need extra legroom or do you prefer to have easy access to the aisle?

Is it better to sit in the front or back of the theatre?

This ultimately depends on personal preference and the type of production. Sitting in the front row can provide a more intimate experience and allows you to see facial expressions and details up close. However, sitting in the back can give you a wider view of the entire stage. It's important to consider the size and layout of the theatre and the type of production when making this decision.

What is the best seat in a theatre?

The "best" seat in a theatre is subjective and can vary depending on individual preferences. Some people may prefer to be in the center for a balanced view, while others may prefer to be on the sides for a different perspective. It's important to consider your personal preferences and the specific layout of the theatre when choosing your seat.

How can I ensure a good view from my seat in the theatre?

To ensure a good view, try to find a seat that is not obstructed by any pillars or other objects. It's also helpful to look at the seating chart for the theatre and choose a seat that is in the center or slightly to the side for a better view. If possible, try to avoid sitting too far to the side or too far back, as this can affect your view of the stage.

Are there any seats to avoid in a theatre?

There are a few seats that are generally considered to be less desirable in a theatre. These include seats with obstructed views, such as those behind pillars or with a poor angle to the stage. Seats that are too far to the side or too far back may also affect the viewing experience. It's also important to consider any potential distractions, such as being close to an exit or a section with frequent foot traffic.
