Who Can Get Infractions and Warnings on the Forums?

In summary, moderators are responsible for locking threads and making decisions without staff review. Infractions may be issued to anyone, with a warning leading to 8 or more points, and a ban leading to a permanent ban if an infraction occurs after a temporary ban.

Can mentors and homework helpers and academic advisers get infractions and warnings? Do they lose their status if they get one? Has that ever happened?

Just curious.

These questions can be answered by reading the physics forum global guidelines:

Disciplinary Action:
If a member violates forum guidelines, he or she may be issued a warning by an administrator or mentor. Warnings range from 0 to 10 "points," depending on the severity of the violation. If a member accrues 8 or more warning points, he or she will be automatically banned from Physics Forums for a period of 10 days. If a member receives any warning after having returned from a temporary ban, that member will then be banned permanently. Obvious, incorrigible spamming or trouble making will be met with a permanent ban.

Your second question cannot be answered, since we do not discuss specific incidents in public.

Infractions may be issued to anyone except admin and mentors. Any disagreements among staff members are discussed and a consensus reached, sometimes by a formal vote.

Any adminstrative actions automatically post for review by the entire staff.

Sorry I didn't understand that sentence.

I believe it means all the mentor staff get a say in any infraction that is issued to any member to make sure the decision by the original mentor was fair.

Yes, that's correct.

Yes, the word "adminstrative" was a poor choice as we do lock threads and whatnot without staff review, but whenever infraction points are issued, and whenever a member is banned, the admin and mentors can all see what was done, and why. And sometimes we will report our own actions as moderators just in case anyone on the staff might not agree with the choice made.

Every once in a while Greg steps in and makes a command decision. And every now and then Greg gets inspired and wants to implement a new idea, so he will make a post asking what we think; sometimes as a courtesy.
