In summary: Therefore, insulation is more important for the function of the fridge compared to the other two materials. In summary, the difference in temperature change between the three containers is due to their varying thermal conductivities, with aluminum having a higher conductivity than glass and plastic. Insulation is the most important material for the function of a refrigerator because it reduces heat flow and helps to maintain the desired temperature inside. The metal and plastic materials serve to provide durability and structure, but insulation plays a crucial role in keeping the fridge running efficiently.

Homework Statement

Hi so i have a few questions on thermal properties, the questions are supposed to be conceptual with no calculations.
1. There are 3 containers. They are made of plastic, glass and alluminum. If you put hot water into the 3 containers, why is there is small difference in temp. change between the 3 containers and large difference in their thermal conductivity.
2. The outside of a refrigerator is made of metal, plastic and insulation. We were supposed to pick one of the 3 materials and why its drastically important than the other two. I picked insulation and basically said that its more important for the function of the fridge because it reduces heat flow. But i got it wrong. Could someone help me on these 2 questions.

For the first question, the difference in temperature change between the three containers is due to the different thermal conductivities of the materials. Glass and plastic have much lower thermal conductivities than aluminum, which means that they are not as good at transferring heat energy. This means that the water in glass and plastic containers will take longer to heat up and cool down than the water in the aluminum container. For the second question, the insulation material is the most important for the function of the refrigerator because it helps to reduce the amount of heat transferred from the outside to the inside of the fridge. Insulation reduces the amount of heat flow by providing a barrier that traps air and slows down the transfer of heat energy. The metal and plastic materials help to create a strong and durable exterior for the fridge, but it is the insulation that helps to keep the cold air inside and the hot air outside.

Related to Why Do Different Materials Affect Temperature Change in Containers?

1. What is thermal energy?

Thermal energy is a type of energy that comes from the movement of particles, such as atoms and molecules, within a substance. It is also known as heat energy and is measured in units of joules (J).

2. How is thermal energy transferred?

Thermal energy is transferred through three main methods: conduction, convection, and radiation. Conduction occurs when heat is transferred through direct contact between two objects. Convection is the transfer of heat through the movement of fluids, such as air or water. Radiation is the transfer of heat through electromagnetic waves.

3. What is the difference between thermal energy and temperature?

Thermal energy refers to the total energy present in a substance due to the movement of particles, while temperature is a measure of the average kinetic energy of those particles. In other words, thermal energy is a measure of the total heat content of a system, while temperature is a measure of the intensity of that heat.

4. How does insulation affect thermal energy?

Insulation helps to reduce the transfer of thermal energy by creating a barrier between two substances with different temperatures. This is because insulation materials, such as foam or fiberglass, have low thermal conductivity, meaning they do not easily allow heat to pass through them.

5. How is thermal energy used in everyday life?

Thermal energy is used in a variety of ways in our daily lives. For example, it is used to heat our homes and water, power our vehicles, and cook our food. It is also used in industry for processes such as melting metals and generating electricity.
