In summary, the purpose of preparing acetanilide is to use it as an intermediate in the synthesis of pharmaceuticals and dyes, as well as a stabilizer in explosives and a precursor in the production of rubber chemicals. The materials needed for its preparation are aniline, acetic anhydride, concentrated sulfuric acid, and ice water, with optional materials including a separatory funnel, filter paper, and a vacuum filtration setup. The procedure involves dissolving aniline in acetic anhydride and adding concentrated sulfuric acid, heating and stirring until a clear solution is obtained, cooling and precipitating in ice water, and filtering and drying the acetanilide. Safety precautions include wearing protective gear and handling concentrated sulfur

In the preparation of acetanilide why is it that zinc dust is used?

Not having even the slightest idea about organics - zinc is used almost always because of its reducing properties. I would dig here.

Acetanilide is typically synthesized from acetic anhydride and aniline.
Zinc isn't required, but it aids acetylation. (for reasons Borek mentioned, as it's a reducing agent)

FAQ: Why is zinc dust used in the preparation of acetanilide?

What is the purpose of preparing acetanilide?

The purpose of preparing acetanilide is to use it as an intermediate in the synthesis of various pharmaceuticals and dyes. It is also used as a stabilizer in explosives and as a precursor in the production of rubber chemicals.

What are the materials needed for the preparation of acetanilide?

The materials needed for the preparation of acetanilide include aniline, acetic anhydride, concentrated sulfuric acid, and ice water. Optional materials include a separatory funnel, filter paper, and a vacuum filtration setup.

What is the procedure for preparing acetanilide?

The procedure for preparing acetanilide involves dissolving aniline in acetic anhydride and adding concentrated sulfuric acid. The mixture is then heated and stirred until a clear solution is obtained. The solution is then cooled and poured into ice water to precipitate the acetanilide, which is then filtered and dried.

What are some safety precautions to take during the preparation of acetanilide?

Some safety precautions to take during the preparation of acetanilide include wearing protective gloves and eyewear, working in a well-ventilated area, and avoiding skin and eye contact with the chemicals. It is also important to handle concentrated sulfuric acid with extreme caution, as it is a corrosive and can cause severe burns.

Can acetanilide be prepared using alternative methods?

Yes, acetanilide can be prepared using alternative methods such as the Schotten-Baumann reaction or the Sandmeyer reaction. These methods involve different reagents and procedures, but ultimately result in the formation of acetanilide. It is important to follow the specific instructions for each method carefully to ensure a successful synthesis.
