In summary, the conversation is about an Electrical Engineering Technologist student trying to understand a design project involving feeding apartment units with 82A of 120V and 68A of 208V. The student is not sure if the 68A of 208V will be on both phases or not. The person responding suggests simplifying the thinking and using the example of a single 68 amp device to understand the flow of current in both phases.

Hello,

I am an Electrical Engineering Technologist student and we have a design project that i am trying to understand. We are feeding apartment units with 82A of 120V and 68A of 208V. I am going to feed each with two phase lines and a neutral. What I am not sure about is if the 68A of 208V will be on both phases or not. Any clarification would be great!

Thank you.

Well - simplify your thinking

if all that 208 load were a single 68 amp device, say a commercial water heater,
at any instant would all 68 amps flow in one phase and out the other?

and you already knew the answer to that.

FAQ: Will 68A of 208V be on both phases?

What is an amp load on 208V feeders?

The amp load on 208V feeders refers to the amount of electrical current that is flowing through the feeder at a voltage of 208 volts. This is an important factor to consider when designing and installing electrical systems, as it determines the size and capacity of the feeder needed to safely and efficiently power devices and equipment.

How is the amp load on 208V feeders calculated?

The amp load on 208V feeders is calculated by dividing the total wattage of the devices or equipment that will be connected to the feeder by the voltage of 208 volts. This will give you the amperage needed for the feeder to handle the electrical load.

What is the maximum amp load for a 208V feeder?

The maximum amp load for a 208V feeder depends on the size and type of the feeder, as well as the electrical code regulations in your area. It is important to consult with a licensed electrician or refer to the National Electric Code (NEC) to determine the maximum allowable amp load for your specific feeder.

How does the length of the feeder affect the amp load on 208V feeders?

The length of the feeder can affect the amp load on 208V feeders due to the resistance of the wire. The longer the feeder, the higher the resistance and the more amperage is needed to deliver the same amount of power to the end devices. This is why it is important to consider the length of the feeder when calculating the amp load and selecting the appropriate size for the feeder.

What are some ways to reduce the amp load on 208V feeders?

There are a few ways to reduce the amp load on 208V feeders, such as using more energy-efficient devices and equipment, managing power usage to avoid overload, and installing multiple smaller feeders instead of one large feeder. It is also important to regularly inspect and maintain the feeder to ensure it is functioning properly and not overloaded.
