Will Saddam Hussein's Trial Be Televised Like O.J. Simpson's?

In summary: The trial of Iraq's former leader Saddam Hussein will begin in the second half of October, reports quote Iraqi officials as saying.Saddam was already convicted of several crimes and is currently held in a US military camp. The prosecution is preparing their case and it is expected to take a very long time to prepare the case.No interesting changes have occurred recently and it would not be news to put "Saddam is still awaiting trial" in the paper every day.Ratings are higher if the media reports about Natalee Holloway every day even if nothing new has transpired, after all the Michael Jackson trial ended (though this was dragged out longer with stories about regretful jurors).

Good question, oldunion. Here is a link to the latest BBC online news article I could find: http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/middle_east/4180372.stm - it's about a week old, though (24 August) and doesn't say much, just that
Saddam Hussein's trial is expected to take place within two months, although though no date has been set.

Think he will replace Rumsfeld at defense. They have similar visions, but Rummy is now considered a softie :-)

They need him to work out a strategy against Iran.

He is held in a US military camp, though he was officially handed over to the Iraqis and is currently standing trial [edit]in an Iraqi court[/edit]. He was already convicted of several crimes.

I hope his court wouldn't last forever!

And who is going to pick up his tab.

There has been a lot of discussion of debt forgiveness for Iraq, but there have also been some interesting, almost forbidden, topics in the debate. Perhaps the least mentioned issue is the reparations of US$200 billion that Iraq allegedly owes, mostly to Kuwait and Saudi Arabia, from the first Gulf War of 1991.

yes...one would wonder why there has been nearly zero news coverage on the subject.

Isn't he in the midst of writing his novel?

Because no interesting changes have occurred recently. It really wouldn't be news to put "Saddam is still awaiting trial" in the paper every day.

In all seriousness, what I believe is occurring right now is that the prosecution is preparing their case. Since we're talking about criminal charges against a head of state, it's going to take a very long time to prepare the case.

Remember the various CEO's that were arrested for various wrongdoings? The media was insane when they were arrested but things went completely quiet for months and sometimes years because it was taking a loooooooooooooooooong time to prepare the entire case.

Because it is news and therefore too boring. This question was raised about the investigation into the Plame leak as well, and why updates are not reported.

Ratings are higher if the media reports about Natalee Holloway every day even if nothing new has transpired, after all the Michael Jackson trial ended (though this was dragged out longer with stories about regretful jurors). Unfortunately we have very shallow people in the US.

Id like to hear a presidential style debate between the two of them. One was open about his fascism, the other takes a keener mind to see through his media allies and brainwashing rhetoric

Only a death penalty? Considering hos present situation I think death is a gift for him. Imagine a dictator as a prisoner while his people finally get the right to criticize him!
