Does anyone here know of a good wire stripper for type K duplex thermocouple wire?

Not specifically but, if you are in a production environment for this, the Stripmaster series by Ideal Industries (https://www.idealind.com) is a place to start (they can make custom blades if the volume justifies it).

If it is a one-time situation like instrumenting a room or a one-of-a-kind-machine, perhaps you can set up the work flow to:

Pull/route all wires
Strip all jackets (razor knife to split, dikes to snip it off)
Strip all conductors

It doesn't take much volume to justify:
1) Making a template for jacket length (even a piece of cardboard cut to length), and
2) Strippers that have a wire stop so you can insert wire to the stop and strip instead of having to make a judgement call on length every time.

Those two tips can easily save 20% to 30% of labor time.

(You may find something with this search:

Cheers,

Thanks Tom, yes these would be for a production environment. We are an OEM supplier of molten aluminum casting equipment, and require the use of T/C placement at various locations of our equipment in the melt stream itself. So looking to supply these tools to assist with our customers needing to make and remake these T/C wire junctions in as easy as possibly fashion, instead of just using dikes!

OK, since it really is a production environment you might investigate powered wire strippers; their are some that operate the same as an electric pencil sharpener.

They may not work well for the jacket of duplex wire, but could be quite useful for the individual conductors.

You best bet is to contact some manufacturers of wire strippers and ask what ideas (products) they have.

Cheers,
Tom

Yes, I have contacted Ideal Industries, and will be sending them samples of the exact wire we use and supply to our customers. Thanks again for your advice!

FAQ: Wire strippers for duplex thermocouple wire?

1. What features should I look for in a wire stripper for duplex thermocouple wire?

When selecting a wire stripper for duplex thermocouple wire, look for features such as adjustable stripping depth, precision blades to avoid damaging the conductors, compatibility with the specific gauge of your wire, ergonomic handles for comfortable use, and the ability to strip both the outer jacket and the individual conductors.

2. Can I use a standard wire stripper for duplex thermocouple wire?

While it is possible to use a standard wire stripper, it is not recommended. Duplex thermocouple wire has specific insulation and conductor materials that require precise stripping to avoid damaging the wire. A wire stripper designed specifically for thermocouple wire ensures better accuracy and reduces the risk of damaging the delicate conductors.

3. How do I ensure I don't damage the conductors when stripping duplex thermocouple wire?

To avoid damaging the conductors, use a wire stripper with adjustable settings to match the insulation thickness of your duplex thermocouple wire. Make sure the blades are sharp and precisely aligned. Practice on a scrap piece of wire to get a feel for the tool, and strip the insulation in small increments if necessary.

4. Are there any specific brands or models recommended for stripping duplex thermocouple wire?

Some recommended brands and models for stripping duplex thermocouple wire include the Ideal Stripmaster, the Klein Tools 11063W, and the Greenlee 1903. These tools are known for their precision, durability, and ease of use. Always check the specifications to ensure compatibility with your specific wire type and gauge.

5. What is the correct procedure for using a wire stripper on duplex thermocouple wire?

First, adjust the wire stripper to the correct gauge and insulation thickness. Insert the duplex thermocouple wire into the stripper, aligning it with the blades. Squeeze the handles to cut through the insulation, then gently pull the wire stripper to remove the insulation without damaging the conductors. Repeat the process for the individual conductors if necessary.
