Working and Pursuing an Education at the Same Time

In summary, the conversation discusses the dilemma of choosing between a job offer from a well-known analog company in Santa Clara and a PhD offer from Purdue University. The main question is whether it is possible to do a part-time masters while working full-time, and if so, how it will affect studies. Some suggest that it is possible to balance both, while others advise asking the potential employer for further education allowance. It is mentioned that many masters programs are designed for working professionals, but may take longer to complete. One person shares their experience of doing a part-time Masters while working full-time and another mentions the difficulty of finding a job in California.

(I may have posted this in the wrong place before)

Hey guys,

I have a good job offer from a well known analog company in Santa Clara as well as an offer for PhD from Purdue University. Any suggestions about which one should I choose. I know it depends on finances and interest and other factors, but I guess my main q is if it is possible to at least do a part time masters and work full time.

Is this possible assuming I take evening or online classes. Will I have no time and go bezerk. Will studies suffer tremendously? Anyone taken this path before?

Please to respond. Thank you.

A lot of masters programs are designed so that you can do them while working full time, they just take longer.

You could ask your potential new employer if they make any allowance for further education. Good employers are happy for their employees to learn, both for their professional development and ability in the role.

I did a MS in Comp Eng and worked full time. Took a little over a year to finish. I'll take the job over Ph.D and do a M.S. part-time, but that's up to you what you really want to do (career-wise) and what you have (financially)

Getting a job during this time and age is nothing less than a miracle, especially in California. My cousin's been out of work in the same area near Santa Clara for over a year now. And he has +6 years experience in software engineering and chip design.

I understand the importance of furthering one's education while also balancing work. Pursuing a PhD from a reputable university like Purdue can open up many opportunities and advance your career in the long run. However, I also understand the financial and time constraints that come with pursuing higher education.

If you are able to manage your time effectively and prioritize your responsibilities, it is possible to work full time and pursue a part-time master's or PhD program. Taking evening or online classes can also provide flexibility and make it more manageable. However, it is important to consider whether this workload will impact your ability to perform well in both areas.

I would suggest carefully assessing your personal circumstances and considering the level of commitment and dedication required for both the job and the PhD program. It may also be helpful to talk to individuals who have taken a similar path before and learn from their experiences. Ultimately, the decision should be based on your personal goals and priorities. Good luck with whichever path you choose.
