Let's be very careful about what you say isn't true. In the example you describe, I did not say that the combined masses did or did not decrease as they approach each other. I said only that their total energy in GR is invariant as they approach each other and after they collide, as judged by a far distant observer. No net energy is gained or lost in this (initially) two-object system.MeJennifer said:That is actually not true under GR.
