Which Circle of Dante's Inferno Fits You Best?

  • Thread starter Zeteg

In summary, the conversation is about taking the Dante's Inferno Test and sharing the results with each other. The test places individuals in different levels of Hell based on their sins, with the Sixth Level being for heretics. The conversation also includes a summary of the punishments for each level and a humorous exchange about being evil and going to Hell.

Take the test! I ended up in level six... it's pretty evil. I don't think it means anything. More or less just for fun :)

My results were...

"You approach Satan's wretched city where you behold a wide plain surrounded by iron walls. Before you are fields full of distress and torment terrible. Burning tombs are littered about the landscape. Inside these flaming sepulchers suffer the heretics, failing to believe in God and the afterlife, who make themselves audible by doleful sighs. You will join the wicked that lie here, and will be offered no respite. The three infernal Furies stained with blood, with limbs of women and hair of serpents, dwell in this circle of Hell."

What were yours? ;)

Level 4. I'm such a nice guy.

"Just before the river Styx is the Fourth Level of Hell. Here, the prodigal and the avaricious suffer their punishment, as they roll weights back and forth against one another. You will share eternal damnation with others who either wasted and lived greedily and insatiably, or who stockpiled their fortunes, hoarding everything and sharing nothing. Plutus, the wolf-like demon of wealth, dwells here."

The levels don't correspond to how evil you are, but what kind of level. Last level is traitors, sixth level is heretics, fifth level is the hateful, i believe second level is lust, 3rd is gluttony. Or that is how hell is structured according to dante at least.

That said:

Fifth Level of Hell

The river Styx runs through this level of Hell, and in it are punished the wrathful and the gloomy. The former are forever lashing out at each other in anger, furious and naked, tearing each other piecemeal with their teeth. The latter are gurgling in the black mud, slothful and sullen, withdrawn from the world. Their lamentations bubble to the surface as they try to repeat a doleful hymn, though with unbroken words they cannot say it. Because you lived a cruel, vindictive and hateful life, you meet your fate in the Styx.

The level of the cruel, vindictive, and hateful. Meh. They forgot apathetic.

Here is how you matched up against all the levels:
(Click on a level for more info)
Level Who are sent there? Score
Purgatory |Repenting Believers Very Low
Level 1- Limbo |Virtuous Non-Believers Very Low
Level 2 |Lustful High
Level 3 |Gluttonous High
Level 4 |Prodigal and Avaricious High
Level 5 |Wrathful and Gloomy Extreme
Level 6 - The City of Dis| Heretics Very High
Level 7 |Violent Very High
Level 8- the Malebolge| Fraudulent, Malicious, Panderers Very High
Level 9 - Cocytus |Treacherous High

I'm way more evil than moonbear it seems. In fact I'm going to hell so fast its going to make Satan's head spin. But this should not be news to anyone here. Told you i was an evil genius.

I'm in the fifth. What a bunch of crap. LOL

BTW, what do they consider cheating? One of the questions asked whether you had cheated on a BF, GF, or spouse? Assuming sex is out of the question anyway, just what IS cheating? I mean in this day and age how can you avoid members of the opposite sex at all? In the workplace and all? Oh well, I'm not to worried. It's all in fun in my opinion...

I can agree that I'm a heretic

Cheating? I assumed either sex with someone else, or dating more than one person at once when they don't all know you are dating others. I'm guessing that would have scored a point for lustful, level 2?

It was kind of long...and of course it's nonsense...do you see anyone here lamenting it's sending us to Hell? Try for level 6, we've got a good party going there. We're inviting anyone from levels 2 and 3 to join us, but those of you in level 5 are just to much of downers for us, sorry.

Alot of these questions (which i understand the purpose of) were really pointless.

Such as, "Do you eat at restaurants several times a week?". Does it that really assert anything useful to this situation?

Gluttons eat lots of food.

All of the questions make sense if you know anything about Dante's Inferno.

  • #20
Are any of those descriptions taken from Dante's Inferno? Those descriptions were vivid and well written.

Is eating at restaurants several times a week really a sign of gluttony? It could just be a hectic work schedule that leaves you no time for cooking. It doesn't ask what you order. You could get the kiddie portion or a salad, or just eat out for lunch not dinner. Obviously, the quiz isn't meant to be taken seriously.

Level 9 - Cocytus

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

This is the deepest level of hell, where the fallen angel Satan himself resides. His wings flap eternally, producing chilling cold winds that freeze the thick ice found in Cocytus. The three faces of Satan, black, red, and yellow, can be seen with mouths gushing bloody foam and eyes forever weeping, as they chew on the three traitors, Judas, Brutus, and Cassius. This place is furthest removed from the source of all light and warmth. Sinners here are frozen deep in the ice, faces out, eyes and mouths frozen shut. Traitors against God, country, family, and benefactors lament their sins in this frigid pit of despair.

Not word for word, but the concept of each level is the same.

Of course The Infernowas written in Rennaisance Italian, so there is no way it could be word for word.

Of course its not completely serious, Moon bear. But the question still makes sense.

Eigth Level of Hell - the Malebolge

Many and varied sinners suffer eternally in the multi-leveled Malebolge, an ampitheatre-shapped pit of despair Wholly of stone and of an iron colour: Those guilty of fraudulence and malice; the seducers and pimps, who are whipped by horned demons; the hypocrites, who struggle to walk in lead-lined cloaks; the barraters, who are ducked in boiling pitch by demons known as the Malebranche. The simonists, wedged into stone holes, and whose feet are licked by flames, kick and writhe desperately. The magicians, diviners, fortune tellers, and panderers are all here, as are the thieves. Some wallow in human excrement. Serpents writhe and wrap around men, sometimes fusing into each other. Bodies are torn apart. When you arrive, you will want to put your hands over your ears because of the lamentations of the sinners here, who are afflicted with scabs like leprosy, and lay sick on the ground, furiously scratching their skin off with their nails. Indeed, justice divine doth smite them with its hammer.

I am on highway to hell

Your fate has been decided...
You are one of the lucky ones! Because of your virtue and beliefs, you have escaped eternal punishment. You are sent to the First Level of Hell - Limbo!
First Level of Hell - Limbo

Charon ushers you across the river Acheron, and you find yourself upon the brink of grief's abysmal valley. You are in Limbo, a place of sorrow without torment. You encounter a seven-walled castle, and within those walls you find rolling fresh meadows illuminated by the light of reason, whereabout many shades dwell. These are the virtuous pagans, the great philosophers and authors, unbaptised children, and others unfit to enter the kingdom of heaven. You share company with Caesar, Homer, Virgil, Socrates, and Aristotle. There is no punishment here, and the atmosphere is peaceful, yet sad.
Level Who are sent there? Score
Purgatory Repenting Believers Very Low
Level 1 - Limbo Virtuous Non-Believers High
Level 2 Lustful High
Level 3 Gluttonous Moderate
Level 4 Prodigal and Avaricious High
Level 5 Wrathful and Gloomy Low
Level 6 - The City of Dis Heretics Moderate
Level 7 Violent High
Level 8- the Malebolge Fraudulent, Malicious, Panderers Moderate
Level 9 - Cocytus Treacherous Moderate

Well, hell! If there's no one out here but me, what's the point of escaping eternal punishment.

No wonder the atmosphere is peaceful, but sad.

The magicians, diviners, fortune tellers, and panderers are all here...

Well, then, iansmith, be sure to pass around the word that they're invited to our party on Level Six! That sounds like a fun crowd to have at a party!

BobG, it's not too late to turn to the dark side and join us down here. As I've always said, what the point of going to Heaven when all the fun people are in Hell?

You are one of the lucky ones! Because of your virtue and beliefs, you have escaped eternal punishment. You are sent to Purgatory!

Purgatory

You have escaped damnation and made it to Purgatory, a place where the dew of repentance washes off the stain of sin and girds the spirit with humility. Through contrition, confession, and satisfaction by works of righteousness, you must make your way up the mountain. As the sins are cleansed from your soul, you will be illuminated by the Sun of Divine Grace, and you will join other souls, smiling and happy, upon the summit of this mountain. Before long you will know the joys of Paradise as you ascend to the ethereal realm of Heaven.

The sad thing is...I actually answered those questions truthfuly. Of course, I'm just starting my life, by the time I get through college I'll be in the 9th level.

I answered truthfully too, but I've lived a bit longer and had more time to be bad. But you won't get all the way to level 9 by the end of college, unless you're working on a Political Science degree. You might be able to join us in level 6 by then though. Keep trying.
