Hi. I've problem with this question:
How much Na2B4O7 * 10H2O and 20% hydrochloric acid solution is needed to make 31 g boric acid?
My work:
\frac{x}{Na_2B_4O_7 * 10 H_2O} = \frac {31}{4 H_3BO_3}
x = 47.8 g
\frac {0.2x}{3HCl} = \frac {31}{4 H_3BO_3}
x = 275 g
I was thinking about make some HCl. My idea was to electrolys a NaCl solution and get a solution of H2 and Cl2. Then ignite the solution, which reacts and becomes HCl. Then I'll solute the gas in water.
Will it work?
coursework - unknown acid: tests - PLEASE HELP!

Hi ppl,
Is propanoic acid stronger than ethanoic?Because propanoic acid has a longer R-group, it will have a greater inductive electron releasing effect than ethanoic acid, so the electron density is greater in propanoic acid than for ethanoic acid. With a region of greater e density...
CH3OOH (aq) + NH3 (aq) ‹———› NH4+ (aq) + CH3COO- (aq)
Would the above reaction, involving acetic acid and ammonia qualify as a proper neurtalization reaction involving a weak acid and weak base? Or, would a reaction involving acetic acid and sodium bicarbonate be better?
Regards
Hi I've been reading a lot about esters and have the general idea but I am not sure about exact amounts of acid catalyst needed.
say the following experiment was tro be carried out to form an ester
R-C=O(O-R2)
*X moles of R-C=O(OH)
*10X moles of R2-C-OH
*How much H2SO4 would be needed?

Hello,
I have a question.Can one (theoretically) obtain Chlorsulphonic acid by disolving chlorhydric acid into sulphuric acid like follows:
H_{2}SO_{4} +HCl=HSO_{3}Cl+H_{2}O .
If not,how can one obtain the Chlorsulphonic acid?
We conducted a lab on Friday and today we have to answer a few post lab questions.
I'm stuck on one question and it asks:

I know that sodium bicarbonate will...
Hi there.
What is the conjugate acid of H2PO4. And what does it mean.
H3PO4 or HPO4
I got it. It means when a base gains a hydrogen ION. H3PO4 is the right answer isn't it.
I'm going over to live in Europe in May/June and I want to take a sheet of acid over with me. I'm too scared to take it on the plane, so I was thinking of faxing it over before hand.
Can anyone tell me if this will work?
Had a lab few days ago and a question was presented:

Hi guys,
Could anyone give me a hand with this one?
During exercise, 2-hydroxypropanoic acid (lactic acid) is produced in the muscles. Deduce whether the ionised or non-ionised form of this weak acid (Ka=1.4*10^-4) is mainly present at the pH of the human body (pH=7.4).
I feel like an idiot asking this in a chemistry forum, but I have looked everywhere. I don't understand what acid and bases are, and how they work. I understand chemical bonding down to quantum physics, but I just don't understand this, what is happening in an acid?
acid or base? please help
hi during a science lab we tesed various unknown substances to classify them as either acid or base.

I have several questions.
1.)Supose [H+] is 100 times less than the ka for an acidic acid-base indicator (see Eq.2), and enough acid is added to the the solution to raise [H+] by a factor of 10,000. What value did the ration of the different colored forms of the indicator, [ln-]/[H ln], have...
Why is HSO3- a stronger acid then H2SO3?
And also, i know that When the size of an atom X increases, the H-X bonds decreases, meaning the strength of the acid increases since more H+ are ionized.
But when when H-X are more electronegitive, doesn't it mean the bonds between the H-X gets...
After doing my first track practice today (and running about 4 miles), I began thinking about what a pain it is that lactic acids can't be neutralized quicker than they currently are. Is it known what chemical in the body eventually breaks them down, and is it available as a suplement?

If a weak acid is added to a strong acid, does it make the solution more acidic or less acidic? Assuming that the weak acid is not one of those ions that can turn into a stronger acid or a stronger base (like H2CO3 <--> HCO3 <--> CO3). I was thinking something like adding ethanoic acid to...
Hi.
I was reading through my organic chemistry book and they had a little piece on carbonic acid. So CO2 reacts with water and produces carbonic acid, very nice, I read about this before. But now that I've been enlighted with organic chemistry and the idea of mechanisms behind every reaction I...

We determined our melting point to be 199 C. Which would correspond to (2R,2S) and (2S,3R) 2,3-dibromo-3-phenylpropanoic acid (mp 202-204 C) but we are trying to determine whether this is a syn or an anti addition.
Any suggestions?
Thanks

The molarity and percent by weight of the acetic acid in the vinegar. Use a value of 1.005 g/mL for the density of the vinegar.
Acetic acid molarity in vinegar = .208 mol / L
How do you calculate the Percent acetic acid by weight (using the acetic acid molarity)?
Thanks for the help.
