Hi there
When talking about limiting amino acids what does it really mean...
What I think it means is say we have a food eg wheat it has all the essential amino acids (aa) in it except one of them is not...
could the equation - pH=pKa+log([A]/[HA]) - be applied for the case of strong acid? Although the percentage of dissociation of strong acid/base is very high, there still exists a equilibrium, right?
secondly, if i tried to explain the resistance in pH of buffer *in terms of* the above...
I am a little stuck on this question :
Solution A contains n moles of a weak acid HX. The addition of some sodium hydroxide to A neutralises one third of the HX present to produce Solution B.
In terms of the amount, n how many moles of HX are present in Solution B?
I think there are one...
Hi,
I am starting to get desperate with my search to find information about the reaction of plastics with acids. I have searched all over the internet for a while now and I have found very little. If anyone knows anything about the form of any reactions that take place with plastics and acids...
I got my test back and one of the questions was the following
Which is a property of a saturated fatty acid?
(a) no double bonds
(b) (c) rubbish
(d) maximum number of single bonds
I answered (d), but the professor says it's (a).
I don't think it's (a) for two reasons-- a pi double...
Hi,
Could anyone lend some suggestions as to where to find information on acid's (pH's) effects on polymers (specifically plastics, but the general polymer/acid reactions are good too). I would especially like articles or papers that relate to this topic, but any help is appreciated. Thanks...
What principle explains the solubility of a substance in aqueous acid or aqueous base?
Ionic solutes and its dissociation is involved in a substance's solubility in an aqueous acid or base. This solubility can be expressed by a chemical equation in which a basic salt results when a a weak...
If the conjugate base of a weak acid ends up being determined as a weak base by dividing the acid dissociation constant by the ion product of water, how can this be?
My book had an example, but goes on to generalize that if a salt's anion is the conjugate base of a weak acid, then the salt...
A beaker with 110 mL of an acetic acid buffer has a pH of 5.00 is sitting on a benchtop. The total molarity of acid and conjugate base in this buffer is 0.1 M. A student adds 6.90 mL of a 0.480M HCl solution to the beaker. How much will the pH change? The pK_a of acetic acid is 4.76.
My...

"Acids, Bases, and the Chemistry of Taste"
I'm using a red cabbage water indicator to test some substances and, so far, I've done Isopropyl alcohol and Saline solution. Neither substance caused any change in the color of the indicator though which I can't figure out... I'm to do a taste test as...
I have problem in complete understanding these concepts especialy in organic chemistry. Inorganic was simple HaON, HCl and similar, but now in organic chemistry Acids and Bases concept and fast determining of those is killing me :(.
Is there a place on internet with good tutorial covering...
I have to place two acids and two bases from a previous assignment on a pH scale using the information I acquired during that particular experiment. The problem is, I couldn't get all the materials I needed so I didn't get to do the assignment. I've been able to figure out what vinegar's pH is...
Problem: Complete Table 1 by noting how each theory defines acids and bases. Also, list chemical reactions that demonstrate the action of each acid or base. For example, in the reaction HA --> H+ + A-, HA acts as an Arrhenius acid.
Firstly, I'd like to check my answers for the chemical...
i know if you have an acid, say .0001 M HCl, to get the pH you simply take the -log of the acid concentration (which is the same as [H+]), but what if you have a diprotic (H2SO4) or triprotic (H3PO4) acid...do you need to multiply the acid contentration by 2 or 3 to get the new H+ concentration...
In my chmeistry lab i use a pipet 5.0 ml of HCl and add it to a beaker. To this beaker I also added 5.0 ml NaOH. I stir the mixture and when a red litmus it turn to blue and when i put a blue litmus it stay blue. So that means its a base, but since its a mixture of an acid and a base shouldn't...
What is a beta amino acid and how would a beta amino acid look like?
I know that the beta carbon is the second carbon from the functional group but which group would be where? Can I have an example of a beta amino acid?
Hi, I got a problem with something regarding to chemistry. How can you determine the pH of a solution with two Acids?
The question says that A 50.00 mL aqueous solution is made by mixing the following two solutions:
10.00mL 1x10^-9M HCl
50.00mL 1*10^-4 M CH3COOH (Ka= 1.8*10^-5)
a)...
I haven't seen any carboxylic acids with double bonds in their parent chains... is this just coincidence or is there a reason that I am not seeing any? I know you can have benzanoic acid ... and even though that's not technically double bonds, its more then one (and its cylic, so its...
I have in my biology notes that the three essential fatty acids are:
Omega-3, Omega-6, and Linoleic acid
I'm confused because googling around I found several sources saying that Omega-6 IS Linoleic Acid. I have a bottle of flaxseed oil capsules and it says pretty much the same thing on the...
i had this question on atest recently, it said to identify whish of these is not a weak acid: HCNO : HBr : HF : HNO2 : HCN. Now the problem i am having with his, is in my book it gives that theyre common acids...ig deal, not if theyre strong or weak, and on the internet as far as i have found...
what does [HIn] and [In] stand for? what are the importance of them? are they the concentrations of H and OH? or pH and pOH?

I'm guessing the answer is a). I found a similar problem except if the bicarbonate was mixed with water instead. And the selections were:
H3O(+), OH(-), CO3(2-), H2CO3
I think the answer to that question would be H2CO3 since it's asking for the conjugate acid which will be the form of...
Hey guys...Can someone please explain to me what the general affect of adding the following acids and bases to my original test on equilibrium where I had K2CrO4 and K2Cr2O7.

I was reading through a physiology book and it stated that oranges and other citric fruits actually increase the alkalinity of your body, even though they're acidic themselves.
Does anyone have an explanation for this?
Thanks,
Jacob
It's been awhile since I've done chem and I don't really remember how to identify Lewis Acids too well so here are a few problems I'd like you guys to check over / correct:

Hi,
I need help in finding some information regarding deprotonation (specifically acids). I know that it is the removal of a hydrogen atom from a compound, but I would like to know some in-depth info on how the reactions occur.
Any help would be great. Thanks!
lol, I hope that a donkey bridge is a used term in English? I'll explain it, just in case.. it is to make an associative link between things to be remembered.
