The atmosphere of Earth is the layer of gases, commonly known as air, retained by Earth's gravity, surrounding the planet Earth and forming its planetary atmosphere. The atmosphere of Earth protects life on Earth by creating pressure allowing for liquid water to exist on the Earth's surface, absorbing ultraviolet solar radiation, warming the surface through heat retention (greenhouse effect), and reducing temperature extremes between day and night (the diurnal temperature variation).
By volume, dry air contains 78.09% nitrogen, 20.95% oxygen, 0.93% argon, 0.04% carbon dioxide, and small amounts of other gases.
Air also contains a variable amount of water vapor, on average around 1% at sea level, and 0.4% over the entire atmosphere. Air composition, temperature, and atmospheric pressure vary with altitude, and air suitable for use in photosynthesis by terrestrial plants and breathing of terrestrial animals is found only in Earth's troposphere and in artificial atmospheres.
Earth's atmosphere has changed much since its formation as primarily a hydrogen atmosphere, and has changed dramatically on several occasions—for example, the Great Oxidation Event 2.4 billion years ago, greatly increased oxygen in the atmosphere from practically no oxygen to levels closer to present day. Humans have also contributed to significant changes in atmospheric composition through air pollution, especially since industrialisation, leading to rapid environmental change such as ozone depletion and global warming.
The atmosphere has a mass of about 5.15×1018 kg, three quarters of which is within about 11 km (6.8 mi; 36,000 ft) of the surface. The atmosphere becomes thinner and thinner with increasing altitude, with no definite boundary between the atmosphere and outer space. The Kármán line, at 100 km (62 mi), or 1.57% of Earth's radius, is often used as the border between the atmosphere and outer space. Atmospheric effects become noticeable during atmospheric reentry of spacecraft at an altitude of around 120 km (75 mi). Several layers can be distinguished in the atmosphere, based on characteristics such as temperature and composition.
The study of Earth's atmosphere and its processes is called atmospheric science (aerology), and includes multiple subfields, such as climatology and atmospheric physics. Early pioneers in the field include Léon Teisserenc de Bort and Richard Assmann. The study of historic atmosphere is called paleoclimatology.
Lets say you have a jar of water, and a jar of air.
You heat both of them 100C
will either of them explode?
ok just kidding.
which one exerts more pressure, and is hence more likely to explode?
did heating the substance turn heat into force? (force per unit area)

Hi everyone! So I've got this similar problem as I posted yesterday, but this one

I am planning on making an experiment about intersecting continuous wave laser from 2 or more source on 1 point in thin air. The laser i am planning to use is the simple laser diode, pumped with continuous wave, instead of using pulsed wave as in the usual laser pointer as i don't need it to...
Hello
Homework Statement
Lets say i have the given parameters:
air volume flow : V = 36 m3/h
Relative humidity: RH=33%
air mixing ratio : X = 5.5 (1g H2O) / 1kg (DRY AIR) (calculated from RH)
air temperature : T= 20 C
So i know how much mass of water is the air compared to the air's "dry air"...
Hello,
It is well known that the atmospheric air pressure is significantly strong but our body does not get crushed by it because and equal pressure pushes from the inside our body.
That said, does it mean that air can exist and be diffused inside solid organs like the lungs, our heart, etc...
Why we assume total air pressure
(dry air +water vapour) to be constant during study of properties of moist air even when it is being heated or cooled how it is possible that pressure is constant , on what basis it is assumed?
I think locally there must be variation in total pressure also due...
Hi! I was wondering how I could come up with a differential equation for projectile motion on a 2D plane when air resistance is not negligible. I'm trying to guess the position of a projected ball at a certain time period by approximating the coordinates using the Euler's method.
Here, I would...

Air is flowing through a pipe, through a heater matrix.
Flow, Inlet temperature and heater power vary. Is it possible to calculate the heat capacity of the matrix by using the Inlet & outlet temperatures, power & flow?

Hi
I am trying to understand the figure 2 I have attached to this post.
From text:
Ok, I get that the air-gap flux density varies in a sinusoidal manner, because the air gap length is not constant i.e. non-constant reluctance and hence non-constant magnetic flux density.

This started out as a thought experiment and then I realized I was stuck in how to figure it out.

Could anyone please let me know if breakthrough spark can happen, or, in general, what will happen in the below system? Note 1: the dielectric layers have a much higher breakthrough voltage than humid air. Note 2: the intensity of the electric field that develops in the flow of the humid air is...
Hi there, i am struggling with the following problem. Air is pumping into a bottle with volume V and pressure Pi until it reaches a final pressure Pf. The temperature remains the same during the process and the gas is an ideal one.
We have to calculate the work that is done.

I've been trying to read up and understand why a air burst of a nuclear weapon is less catastrophic than a ground burst when speaking about nuclear fallout. I think I understand that intensity of the dangerous radiation falls off quickly because of an inverse square law, but what happens to the...

Hi all,

I have a work related question. Although it seems like a relatively simple question, I am having difficulties finding the correct equation(s) to calculate the answer.
Question: Given a fixed volume air tank filled with pressurized air, how does one calculate the flow rate over time through...
This seems simple, but I have some confusion. I'm trying to refine a numerical simulation to get away from my isothermal assumption, to account instead for isentropic temperature and pressure changes in pressure tank with an orifice.

I wanted to ask. Since jets fly at great speed, often even supersonic, I'm curious about next things:

2) How does all that force resistance affect a pilot?
3) What protection do they have, if any?
4) And purely speculative...

If we warm a parcel of air that is open i.e not enclosed, such as the atmosphere.
What happens to pressure? do we say it increases or decreases?

I have a central heat and air unit enclosed in a closet like area and it is very loud in my living room,
is there a way to install a noise cancelling unit to muffle that sound of the blower unit?
Sound is vibration of air molecules knocking into each other. Intuitively, it seems the faster a molecule travels before hitting another, the faster the propagation of sound.
Can't you hit air molecules harder, so the air molecules will travel faster and spend less time between collisions, and...
