There seem to be a lot of books about bio-inspiration to engineering and explaining wildlife through physics, so...
Compared to humans, why can some animals jump many more times their size? I'm thinking of cats here which apparently can jump up to seven times their length.
From a physics standpoint, what would be an approximate answer to this, and how would determine it using scaling arguments?
Hi, All:
I've been curious about this for a while:
Why are there different names for different groups of animals?
We have ( I think) schools of fish, packs of wolves, etc.
I imagine it may have to see with the fact that groups of animals are organized differently.
Still...
How would they look like?
Being more specific and less speculative: would higher atmospheric pressure (ex. 5 atm) mean that it is easier to fly/glide because lower wingspan would allow to achieve the same lift? Or it would be actually harder, because denser atmosphere would mean higher drag...
Are neurons in humans different of the ones of other animals like spiders for example? In other words if one shows you a neuron under the microscope, can you identify from which animal it comes from?
Why are women more brightly "colored" (whereas in other animals males usually are)?
So, possibly I'm looking for the explanation according to Richard Dawkins, but I'd welcome all points of view. Why do women dress more brightly (when men still do the courting), while in other animals the sex...
Does anyone know how I can find out which animals have a pre frontal cortex and which do not?
I am interested becuase I came across a claim that seems highly suspicous printed in a book by a philosopher named Michael Murray.
He claims animals have pain but they are not aware of their pain...
This is sort of an alternative to the 'would you eat cultured meat' question. What if we could engineer animals without conciousness (sentience)? Would it be cruelty free? Would you eat it?
Example:

I find it terrifying in a...
The pattern could be at an arterial, arteriole or capillary level.
There are plenty of examples of branched patterns in organisms.

I recently had a science exam and there is one question I would like to know about.
Question: Some students noted the number of organisms living in a pond. The table below shows the number of plants and animals:
Plants
Position in pond Number of plants...
When we moved from Los Angeles to Oregon, we were challenged to understand the attitude that many people around here have about animals. After a time we began to understand that it goes back to farming. Farmers often view animals like cats and dogs more as farming implements or cattle, rather...
First Queenie the water skiing elephant and now Shrek the hairy sheep have passed away in the last few days. :frown:
May they rest in peace.

What is it about some humans that allows them to treat animals as if they were mindless pieces of flesh grown in a test tube?

Hi
I'm not a biology or science student. So, please keep your replies in plain and straight language so you could be understood. Thanks.
Do animals and birds also become unconscious during their deep sleep like humans? Among humans the extent to which one is absorbed in one's sleep varies...
I have observed that the animals and birds have a kind of idea that humans' face (and eyes) is a primary front to observe the world around them. If one has his back toward the bird, then the bird won't feel that uncomfortable. But when you stare at an animal or bird, it becomes shy or afraid and...
I was thinking how animal's teeth does not decay, as they do not brush their teeth...? if brushing is soooo crucial for healthy teeth... Are toothpastes just a whiteners with good smell or ...
How did humanoids had healthy teeth without having toothpastes?
Thanks for your replies.
The other day I was watching on TV "When Dinosaurs roamed America"
They were saying that a T.Rex mother and her two offsprings would hunt in a pack like wolves. The offsprings because they could run faster than the adults would herd the larger prey into a trap where the mother would ambush...

Do animals have a right to privacy? Do animals even understand the concept of being filmed?
Does a dog care whether or not you are standing there when it poops?
Say everyone in the world suddenly became vegan (eating no animals products whatsoever). How would we take care of the domesticated animals (those that cannot survive without humans)?
Not all animals can be used for work.
There are 1.3 billion cattle, 2 billion pigs, 24 billion chickens, and 1...
Hi all,
I am so proud of my daughter (11)!
Around 2 months ago we gave her a puppy, though we all together take care of it. From day one we have put in a lot of effort in teaching him to pie outside (not in the house!).
My daughter claims to talk with her dog and I have always encouraged...
Animals which attack their "cousins"
Besides humans, what are the most advanced animals to attack their own species because of dissimilar genetic traits - e.g., racism, disability bias or sexism.
Could this be explained in terms of natural selection?
This is a show on National Geographic. It's a group of "tough guys" that are real softies when it comes to animals. They go to great lengths to rescue animals and see that they are given proper medical care and humane treatment. Just a great show and an extraordinary group of people.

Why do some people love "connecting" with animals?
I was just watching a series about a man who lives among wild bears. While this is a bit extreme, I can appreciate the desire to "connect" with other species.
Why? No, this is not a trick question. I just don't see any particular reason why...
When humans eat steak , the human body converts those animal protiens into human protein.
how does the body actually does that ? does it break down the animal protein into its subsequent amino acids or just repair its 3D structure to match that of the human protein structure without breaking...
It is no secret that many species are endangered and some are probably becoming extinct as we speak. Here are some that were photographed before their demise.

I've always been curious about the answer to this question. Can anyone point me to some research regarding this subject matter? Have we made any advances on finding out the answer to this question? I am assuming that it would be pretty inefficient, and toiling on the body and brain to be active...
Many people think of animals as stupid and capable of learning only through conditioning without the ability to make creative leaps. My question is are there any instances where an animal has tried to train a human successfully? Most human would be to blithe to even entertain the notion that...
If a turtle and beetle fall from the same height, which would sustain more injury? Assume that both the turtle and beetle are geometrically similar. The amount of force of which the creatures reach the ground would be the measured parameter, right? So, including air resistance in the equation...
Does anyone know a site that shows what species of any animal is in an area. Ideally one that would picks states, countries, or zip codes. I'm just interested in knowing about what animals are around me and identifying them. Thanks in advance.
I remember reading somewhere that animals do rape each other sometimes.
One of my friends told me that she didn't think animals could rape each other. She said, "Animals don't have the notions of consent that humans do."
Do animals rape each other?
There is supposed to be a switch of magnetic poles in several thousand years which already started 150/200 years ago. This gave me an idea. Can the changing magnetic orientation cause the whales (and other large mammals living in the sea who use the Earth's magnetic field) to "crash" on shores...
Hi guys,
Some background : I'm in the early stages of my first semester of High School Biology and I'm already having some problems coming to terms with the basics. Our original teacher was in car accident over break so we're stuck with a sub, who's a spanish teacher and completely hopeless...
Homework Statement
A wooden rod of negligible mass and length 85.0 is pivoted about a horizontal axis through its center. A white rat with mass 0.500 clings to one end of the stick, and a mouse with mass 0.240 clings to the other end. The system is released from rest with the rod...
Hi,
Cold blooded animals don't produce body heat to keep themselves warm. Why is this?
Is their metabolism more efficient (produce more ATP rather than heat)?
Just curious, does anyone here do any animal breeding and make a profit from it (or at least make enough to cover expenses for the hobby)?
What sorts of animals have you bred? How much fun is it? How much work is it? How much of a profit can you make with different animals?
