Hello friends,
so i have this problem:
A beam under test has a measured radius of curvature of 300 m. The bending moment applied to it is 8 Nm. The second moment of area is 8000 mm4. Calculate the modulus of elasticity for the material.
ok so using the engineers bending equation i have...
I think this is the right place to put this. If not I apologize. Feel free to move.
I am trying to solve the bend angle for a bar given specific dimensions. The bend angle is acute as in the bar traverses the pin for more than 90-degrees. The bend angle is the angle of the projected lines...
Say I have a wooden beam with an angled pattern in it if the beam is flexed (and assuming First order shear deformation theory holds: parallel lines remain parallel after flexing) what would the flexed pattern look like?
I think it would look like the pattern in the middle picture since the...
Hi. I was assigned this coursework by my lecturer. The problem is I have only been taught how to analyse a solid beam section and not a hollow section as is shown in the problem. What I would like to know is how to calculate the area. Usually I would do this by calculating Length x Breadth. I...
Bending moments Help!
Hi guys, didnt really know how the layout of a bending moment diagram would fit under the standard template provided so i'll have a bash at explaining the problem.
On my school course i have been doing bending moments/diagrams and shear force diagrams, but a few days...

Would anyone be able to explain how to calculate and use bending moments? I have been studying cantilevers and Euler's strut and I don't understand the following:
Why for a cantilever the bending moment is positive, and for the Euler strut the bending moment is negative. As far as I can tell...
I think the broadest way to frame this question would be as follows:
"If a metal conductor (copper wire) were bent at room temperature, then placed in a cryo-cooler and cooled to ~30-80 kelvin, would it experience any 'unbending?'"
More specific to the situation, I've bent down the center...
Very simply put.
Is it possible to determine bending stress in a beam without knowing the young's modulus of the material used? All equations I've seen seem to include in some form an E value ( young's modulus), which is used in conjunction with a stress value to evaluate the strain.
I have the solution's manual for this particular problem, but I'm having hard time understanding the steps they've taken. I've attached pictures of the problem below.
For the shear, are they using 1/2*x*(wx/L) because it is equal to the area of the force?
And for the bending moment, where are...
I have a steel deck (a) 2000mm x (b) 4200mm overall comprising 12.5mm durbar plate (grade S275) welded to RSA ribs at 400mm spacings, the plate is unsupported in the other plane (4200mm span) with the exception of end plates.

Hello,
while solving bending of light problem, where I shoot a light ray from one tower to other. How much light has fallen upto the middle point ? I was able to reduce the eq to

In strength of materials, we have to do a project using strain gages to measure a weight between 0 and 10 lbs with an accuracy of .1lbs. My group is using bending strain. We have a formula, S_{}b=\frac{F*L*6}{E*b*h}, where F is the weight applied, L is the length, E is the Young's Modulus, b...

I just watched a show on Einstein concerning this theory of general relativity. Around 1922 photographs of stars from an eclipse were used to measure the bending of light from those stars around the gravitational field of the sun. Those measurements were used to confirm Einstein's theory. All...

I read an article about Brake Shafts bending behavior due to braking.

Could anyone explain me the reason for this...
OK I have no idea how to work this out. I've googled bending radius but it doesn't really help a great deal.
It's the 2nd part of the last question:

I guess it has been too long since i have had to use any math beyond arithmetic. I am working on fabricating some tube work, and these similar shapes keep coming up. I keep thinking i can calculate them out, but for some reason i always get stumped and feel like i am missing some information. I...
I'm working on a problem involving the bending of a beam.
The bending is a result of an expansion within the beam, rather than an external load. Basically, there is an expansion in the volume of one side of the beam and a contraction on the other side. I have therefore calculated a...

I apologize for not using the template, but my question is more of a conceptual question than anything else.

Hi, everyone.
I was told that when a beam is short, L<=5H, the equation of "Stres=Moment*/2nd moment of initeria" is not valid (how).
(where H = deapth of beam ; L is the location of F acting on that beam)
Is that ture and is that relate to principle axis?
Also if it is ture, why...

Hi,
I came across a piece of maths with which I am struggling to find info on. It has to do with the stress induces in a cylindrical shaped wire (nanowire to be precise).
The article where the maths appear is attached. The specific problem is in equations 12 through 13.
