All explanations of the big bang that I have ever seen, refer to all the matter in the universe coming into existence at an infinitely small point, following which there was a great expansion. Wouldn't it be more likely that the big bang happened in perhaps a spherical volume?
If one...
I have recently been studying cosmology in my free time, but I came across something that strikes me as rather odd. From what I know, at the time of the Big Bang, there was an even amount of matter as there was antimatter. There was also a superpartner for every particle. This would cause the...
You probably know that there is a lot of evidence supporting the big bang, like the expansion of the universe, and many others that i can't name from the top of my head, but I heard on a TV show that the starting partials that came out of the Big bang were faster then the speed of light. They...
I read this in article "Misconceptions about the big bang" that was mentioned in another thread:
"For example, when a star explodes as a supernova, it brightens and then dims — a process that takes about two weeks for the type of supernova that astronomers have been using to map out space...
The title says it all. With all that mass in such a small space it must have been one, but then everything would have to stay inside it. If it was still a black hole we'd have a closed universe but nobody believes that anymore. Does this mean the whole universe started out as Hawking radiation...
If the universe expands by a percentage per unit time then it really would have no beginning. X number of years in the past it would have been half it's current size, 2X years in the past it would have been 1/4 it's current size, etc... At no time would it's size have been zero unless it's rate...
Is there any possibility of coming up with physical measurements that will ever tell us any thing about the universe before the big bang? I can not think of any.
In Big Bang theory, Spacetime itself expands from Planck size to the universe today. This means there is no existing space before the bang.
But what if we assume space and time already existed in the universe and the Big Bang was an explosion of just matter. Is there no cosmology theory or...
So from what I understnad the model, once the universe was hotter and densier, but I heard also the saying that at the instance of it occurring that spacetime started as well, so it's not really a big bang, as in an explosion; and they also describe it as not having a centre to it (obviously if...
The standard (popular) explanation about big bang goes like this: "We observe red shift in distant galaxies in all directions. One might think that this means that we are in the center of the universe, where some explosion occured, but there exists a more likely explanation: The universe is an...
Good day All,
Our current understanding of time is that it is not linear or constant; just add gravity.
I've heard a lot about the time scale of the big bang. Now do science take into account the vast difference of gravity (concentration of gravity) during the first few minutes of the big...
I come from an experimental backround with no astronomy so I am hoping this question makes sense!
If the theory of the big bang is correct and space started off at a singularity and is now expanding, there must be an outer edge to this? If this is true then what is it expanding out into...
It is my understanding that at one time all matter in the universe was an object of near infinite density the size of a marble. My question is, was this "Marble" surrounded by space/time?
if so, isn't the size of the mass relative to your position in that space time?
After the Big Bang it was a short period of inflation. After that the physics that we know is supposed to apply.
After inflation the speed of the expansion was smaller than the speed of light and all the mass of the universe was in a relatively small volume.
Why was not the universe a black...
Since the big bang singularity has infinite density, gravity, and heat, am I correct to think that it has infinite energy?
Since the black hole singularity also has infinite density, gravity, but has finite heat, does it have infinite energy as well?
With regards to the black hole...
Here's some strange stuff coming from Penrose... An article on Universe Today:

And the paper:

Okaaaay... Granted, I need to actually pore over...
When can true singularity take place? Was the big bang the only chance for this condition? Do black holes represent a singularity? I would doubt this because a black hole only exists because there is a contrasting environment with which to compare and identify the event.
Please exuse my terminology, I am just a fan of physics.. and was curious about an idea..
Im curious about the entire universe and would like to know what will happen when the entire universe has supercooled to zero, this will happen correct? when all the energy in the universe has ceased to...
I am doing my science coursework on the Big Bang Theory. Do you know any reliable websites where i can use quotes from scientists to help back up the information i have gathered? Thankyou
Hello I was searching a community like this one and I am glad I found one.
I have a question about the beginning of the universe. I am trying to make a simulation of big bang, as I know after the big bang enormous amount of matter scatter around and they started to combine and turn into...
1. Is it possible that dark energy didnt originate from bigbang but from another that precedes the bigbang?
2. Are dark energy and dark matter in our solar system?
Thank you very much
When I think of what happened in the big bang theory and in today's world when we look through telescopes and look at distant objects it raises the question of how far back in time can we actually see with more and more powerful telescopes?
One thing that I find confusing is that at the time...
Hi,
I'm a physics student but I have not done much astronomy/cosmology. I was sitting here thinking, and something struck me. This thought is only a couple of minutes old so it's not much more than half-arsed musings at this stage. However, I am curious about whether someone who knows what they...
Big bang suggests that there was only a concentrated mass.was there no space? If there was no space where did it come from?[i mean what makes space?].time also started after big bang.how did it start?
Don't u guys think there's somethin missing in this theory?
The Big Bang, Entropy Destruction, and the Beginning of the Universe?
So for a while now I've been pondering the ideas of times arrow, the creation of entropy and disorder, and ultimately how the higher order state of the universe all originates with the big bang. According to modern cosmology...
How do you calculate an "intuitive" date and time from the BIG BANG to NOW? :-)
For you Drum and Bass heads :-)
Unfortunately Professor Hawking is a busy man who cannot be a hub to the world. Until we can query his brain electronically that is.
Dear Professor Hawking,
Is it possible...
I've heard it stated on popular TV science programs that light from the big bang could seen if we could look far enough into empty space. How could we get where we are before the light from the process that created us?
Hi guys, just a quick post about the big bang theory and other possible theories. I am by far no scientist, nor do I work in a scientific environment. I am simply amazed by the creation of the universe and sadly think about it on a regular basis. One thing I could not understand was how all the...
Is there a consesnsus as to whether the big bang represent an ultimate beginning ?
it seems to me that the answer to that question is no.
The reason for this is that we need a quantum theoy of gravity to describe the moment of the big bang and all current attempts at this eg LQG, Hoyava...
How long did the big bang last? Is it still going on?
If it is still going on (as galaxies are still moving away), is mass still being produced? If mass is no more being produced, is the space between current galaxies positions and original big-bang-singularity position completely empty?
If all galaxies originated from big-bang, and if currently galaxies are still moving away one from the other, shouldn't it be possible to determine also where they are moving away from? i.e.where the big-bang-singularity was?
hey all,
i'm going to be doing a presentation for my astronomy module, and i was thinking that i should talk about the idea of the universe being in an eternal cycle of expansion and rebirth.
i'll compare the expansion of a universe to a spring and harmonic motion. if the rate of the...
big bang contradicts flat universe??
Hi, the data says our universe is flat, but we are also told it starts from big bang into a 3 dimensional world.
How can our universe is flat from all direction while we live now in 3 D universe from a big bang? it has to be a curve if it is from big...
If temperature is a measure of the kinetic energy of atomic particles in matter, and at the instant of the big bang no elementary particles existed, how can the early universe be said to have huge or nearly infinite temperature?
Hello,
I've seen some scientists say on videos and write in books that big bang was the expansion of space itself. Is there actual evidence to support this? That space expands on a large scale after the big bang is ok but to say that the big bang was the expansion of space itself seems a bit...
The big bang was an explosion of space and time and becouse space and time was not inexistance until after the big bang it is impossible to ask when or where the big bang happend... right.
I think I understand the basics of the Big Bang but after trying to explain it to someone else, I've discovered that there are many details lacking in my knowledge. So I have come here in the hopes of alleviating my ignorance...
I understand that in the very early universe, all the energy in...
I don't know much about big bang theory except that it says that the universe is expanding..
What i don't understand is that why isn't the gravitational force pulling everything together ?
Is there any other force which is leading to the expansion??
If we've perfectly located all of that mass, doesn't its momentum have to be infinetly or maximally dispersed. It would be a slow motion big bang from our frame because of space and time contraction and we couldn't even see it, but it seems like the mass should disperse in some diffraction pattern.

ScienceDaily (June 14, 2010) — New research by astronomers in the Physics Department at Durham University suggests that the conventional wisdom about the content of the Universe may be wrong.
Although at the bottom of the page he...
I am having problem with understanding the concept of big bang theory. Actually I don't believe in the theory. How can we say that this universe was formed because of a big explosion? We can't answer the question what happened before that.
What I was thinking is that we know if the Big Bang occurred that it explains why we think the universe is expanding. I thought about what force triggered the singularity to expand into space itself. Using Newtons First Law of Motion, that a body remains at rest or travels in a straight line...
I have not learned of any evidence that would help me decide between these two theories:
1. The big bang was an explosion of an object smaller than an atom.
2. The big bang was an explosion of an object larger than a base ball.
Does our current technology permit us to find such evidence...
In my opinion if the Big Bang Theory is correct, it would have resulted in a really massive black hole, "Ultramassive Black Hole(UBH)".
Great Attractor could be the location of the "UBH", origin of the Big Bang.
This could explain the Dark flow and all galaxies should orbit around the "UBH"...
explanation for the big bang??
This is my first post to PF but this question has been really bothering me for a while. In the theory of the "big bang" the universe was created from 1 gravitational singularity holding all the mass and energy. This would be very similar to the black holes we see...
The observed expansion of the Universe is an example of the Holographic Principle. The galaxies escape from us not through the space but the space itself is carrying them away.
Where comes the space (vacuum) from ?
We know that in the holography there is an illusion of a spatial object...
