I don't know much biology. But is it possible that Cancer in general is good for you?
My reasoning is that Cancer is actually produced by our body to repair cells, but sometimes our body lose control of the Cancer and it becomes harmful.
Example, smoking causes damage to lunge tissues...
Our family dog has bad cancer and is to be put to sleep today, we had him as rescue dog 10 years ago, he is now 16 years old, he has all ways been a loyal and friendly dog we shall miss him.
I have always wanted to cure cancers and diseases since my mother had breast cancer a while back, and through my love of science and Engineering-robotics(I was looking at ME to get into robotics at first) I came across nanotechnology. Since I want to use nanomachines to work towards cures and...

This is pretty exciting news.
I wonder how they define "response" in response rate.
I know geopathology is supposed to be much wider, but I would like to ask just about this part: Is it possible that underground water or minerals cause cancer or prevent plants from growing?
Before you dismiss it, remember science is driven by observations and experiments. It's not like...
I was actually surprised by this. I have always read that Americans are addicted to cars, etc, but I didn't think they were this addicted:

I heard that there is a genetic mutation that can make organisms (Im not sure if they've seen this in just lb animals or people) highly resistant to AIDS, ie it takes 1000x the amount of the virus to affect them or something like that and that this genetic mutation might have helped people...
My grandfather was just diagnosed with Colon cancer. He had surgery last week, but seems to be having trouble recovering. He is home, but says the bad days out weigh the good. He is currently 79 years old. Does anyone have statistics on recovery rates for the different ages?
Are there any clinical trials or anything like that involving par4 gene and humans to make people more cancer-resistant, do you think it would work to make people cancer-resistant like it does in mice?
if there was a cancer resistant person do you think their white blood cells would cure cancer...
The spectrum for cell phones is typically in the 850 MHz range. E=hv yields around 3.515E-6 eV. The lowest natural state electron binding energy is on the order of 10 eV >> 3.515E-6. Is this enough to dispel the "correlation"? Are there any other particle interaction mechanisms that would...
Homework Statement
You are asked to consult for the city's research hospital, where a group of doctors is investigating the bombardment of cancer tumors with high energy ions. The ions are fired directly toward the center of the tumor at speeds of 5.0 x 10 ^ 7 m/s. To cover the entire tumor...
I have always wondered about this? Does anyone know if chemists have an abnormally high rate of cancer later in life compared to everyone else? Has there ever been a study done of this? Seeing how much crap I've breathed in like hexanes, DCM, hydrogen sulfide, chlorine, and all sorts of...
i was wondering how is taxol targeting specifically at cancerous cells? I mean to say how does it know that a cell is cancerous? Why doesn't it effect skin cells which also have rapid division and stabilizing microtubules in other cells than cancerous would be drastic, wouldn't the immune system...
Hey all,
It seems that my grandmother may have cancer :frown: We don't know for sure as yet. Because of the poor medical facilities in her country, she will be coming to the US for a biopsy in a few weeks time. My grandma went to a doctor becuase there was a little growth on her face that...
I only have limited knowledge about cancer but to my understanding it is a (disease??) where there is a mutation within cells causing apoptosis to fail. This effected cell or cells then multiply with all of the daughter cells with the same mutation.
I understand that apoptosis important but...
The source is lost to me now, but I remember hearing that cancer and evolution (and even radioactive mutation) are all the same physical process, and that the difference between them is human conception.
That is, if the changes result in what was see as a benefit, we call it evolution, but if...
Here's a nice little crackpot ad from a magazine. I removed all of the contact information so it doesn't break the advertising rules on here. This is just for humor value.

Something that always gets me is when people come out saying 'blah blah blah the medical establishment doesn't want to cure you' and when people go 'look at radiation/chemo, people look pale and sickly and look how many of them die anyways'. You also have these 'natural methods' saying look how...

I think the major obstacle to chemical evolution is to explain controlled cell growth. I do not know of a reason why, at the early stages of the Earth's history, controlled cell growth should replace uncontrolled cell growth (or dominate before it even uncontrolled cell growth even came to be)...
couple months ago i don't know why really. but i was reading up on Botox. which is ofcoarse related to the good old "Botulin toxin" and this screws with acetocolyne(sp?) cycle. which then this causes the cells to eventually die.
Now what I am wondering. could this be used as like a cancer...
I just watched a story on fox news about a website that sells a drug that the company claims can cure cancer. Here is the website if you want to check it out:

Recently, my father was diagnosed with having a malignant tumour in his oesophagus. :frown:
The prospect doesn't look too good; only 10 percent are expected to survive the 5 first years after diagnosis.
Does anyone at PF have any good knowledge about this disease?
Thanks in advance.

Can plants get cancer? I don't see any reason for plants not to get cancer, but i have never heard of a speciies of plant really 'dying' from a cancer of any kind.
Any answers ppl?
Whats been known to increase a person's risk of getting cancer?
I know a person's genetics have been shown to increase a person's risk of getting cancer
I know certain foods have been shown to increase a person's risk of getting cancer
I know (Obviously) smoking has been shown to increase a...

i am not chemist, and i know very little about chemistry.
My friend's family has a history of cancer, could she be screened for (genetic) markers that indicate high risk for certain cancers or something and how much would that cost and how helpful would it be
thanks
If a tumor cell grows with rate m, and dies with rate n (m>n), their population number is P, after tme t, how can set up a mathematical fomuler for growth ? If i also have data from 100 patients, is it useful ?

I just wanted to start this thread about the risks of using cell phones. Today there was a new story in the BBC http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/health/4432755.stm
This can only make me laugh since the wavelength of the radiation can in no way affect the cells in the brain. What was this Swedish...
Chemotherapy is a way to treat cancer with very powerful medications. My friend Melissa, God rest her, had Burkets Lymphoma, they treated her with chemo. She had this long, I mean down to her butt long, natually blonde tight ringlet hair. She lost it all. Why does chemo make the person being...
Hullo. I was supposed to briefly summarize the cellular effects of cancer. I was wondering if I should add anything to this:
"Cancer on the cellular level is really quite simple. What happens, is that the cancer mutation forces cells to rapidly accelerate all steps of their cycle. The...
Hey everyone. For my Biology II AP class we were assigned a project in which we have to basically write a term paper on a subject relating to evolution. I asked my teacher whether cancer was tied to evolution in any way and he said there is a possibility. I just have no clue where to start. If...

Please suggest good ideas to prevent it,
In terms of:
1) food you eat (eating habit)
2) water you drink
3) air
4) exercise
5) control of temperament
6) etc.
Hey guys!
I'm taking a pretty basic cell biology class this semester, our book is "The World of the Cell", 5th edition, by Becker, Kleinsmith, and Hardin.
