A central processing unit (CPU), also called a central processor, main processor or just processor, is the electronic circuitry that executes instructions comprising a computer program. The CPU performs basic arithmetic, logic, controlling, and input/output (I/O) operations specified by the instructions in the program. This contrasts with external components such as main memory and I/O circuitry, and specialized processors such as graphics processing units (GPUs).
The form, design, and implementation of CPUs have changed over time, but their fundamental operation remains almost unchanged. Principal components of a CPU include the arithmetic–logic unit (ALU) that performs arithmetic and logic operations, processor registers that supply operands to the ALU and store the results of ALU operations, and a control unit that orchestrates the fetching (from memory), decoding and execution (of instructions) by directing the coordinated operations of the ALU, registers and other components.
Most modern CPUs are implemented on integrated circuit (IC) microprocessors, with one or more CPUs on a single IC chip. Microprocessor chips with multiple CPUs are multi-core processors. The individual physical CPUs, processor cores, can also be multithreaded to create additional virtual or logical CPUs.An IC that contains a CPU may also contain memory, peripheral interfaces, and other components of a computer; such integrated devices are variously called microcontrollers or systems on a chip (SoC).
Array processors or vector processors have multiple processors that operate in parallel, with no unit considered central. Virtual CPUs are an abstraction of dynamical aggregated computational resources.
A few days ago a buddy of mine showed me a two year old article, telling that Israel have developed an optical CPU. I did check i further and it is true, but I can not understand how such a device can work..
Is there anyone who could explain it to me?
Have problem with my cpu, there is no sound.
After trying different speakers and no one worked, I came to the conclution that the sound card, which is integrated, must be broken. Hence I bought a new one and plugged it in.
The cpu seems to have had no problems with finding it and installing...

Hey... i noticed that my cpu usage is constantly at 100% thus increasing my CPU temperatures.. do u guys know what the problem could be? I've got some some toshiba junk installed that came along with my laptop but i don't think that's what's causing the problem.. Fyi, my OS is Windows Xp Home...
Suddenly, my system performance indicator shows that my CPU usage is 100% - and this is just after start-up (ie : without starting any programs other than those processes that automatically open and reside in memory)
I only checked this because my computer (an old 750 MHz Dell Dimension...

The IBM CPU that goes in the G5 won against the Pentium 4 and 64-bit from AMD?
How can that be!?
It takes 2 of those CPUs to even draw a fair comparison against a single Intel or AMD CPU.

It turns out that I have been fighting just this problem with an older industrial computer [industrial automation stuff]. Due to my lack of familiarity with this particular processor, I couldn’t be sure if I had configuration problems or some other software induced problems. I just observed a...
I really hope AMD will be successful to make 64bits CPU the popular choice over 32bits CPU, so that we can have awesome 3D gaming and unprecedented computing power.
If you go to AMD website, it always uses Intel's CPU to benckmark its own processors, try to impress you that AMD is as good as/ or even better than Intel.
However, intel's benchmark is on its own processors, never use AMD to benchmark.
I think intel is more gentleman!
