Discovery Channel (known as The Discovery Channel from 1985 to 1995, and often referred to as simply Discovery) is an American multinational pay television network and flagship channel owned by Discovery, Inc., a publicly traded company run by CEO David Zaslav. As of June 2012, Discovery Channel is the third most widely distributed subscription channel in the United States, behind TBS and The Weather Channel; it is available in 409 million households worldwide, through its U.S. flagship channel and its various owned or licensed television channels internationally. It initially provided documentary television programming focused primarily on popular science, technology, and history, but by the 2010s had expanded into reality television and pseudo-scientific entertainment. As of September 2018, Discovery Channel is available to approximately 88,589,000 pay television households in the United States.
Up until today I understood, in my own feeble way, that masses distorted space/time and explained how gravity worked. So I have one pre-discovery question to see if I understood that before we move on to the new discovery...

find new planets by detecting dips in light of stars when planets transits. maybe you will find a cool planet in the process. with data from kepler.
heres a link to planet hunters: http://www.planethunters.org/
I read in a couple of papers about asteroid hunting that they used artificially implemented asteroids in real images to see if their detection algorithms could find them. This way, the scientists determined their asteroid survey efficiency in real data.
As I don't have the resources to work so...
HI guys,
a quick question. After the announcement of the discovery of the higgs-like resonance in July 2012 with ~5sigma significance by both ATLAS and CMS, what is the current p-value distribution with the full data set taken into account? And therefore, what is the total significance reached...
I'm reading Lee Smolin's paper: Lessons from Einstein’s 1915 discovery of general relativity
On p10, he writes:
I don't follow why the restriction to relational degrees of freedom necessarily implies that as we get closer to a fundamental theory there should be fewer symmetries.
Any thoughts?
Hello everyone
What do you think is the greatest discovery in physics in the last two years?
I think Higgs boson is the greatest one, isn't it?
It was discovered by peter Higgs and François Englert and they were awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics.
If I have made a discovery relating to how certain codons in DNA behave, what could I do to make a patent/ get rights to my discovery? My discovery is not, but is similar to the discovery that AUG Is the start codon for a protein code. Ideas/Help?
I figure out a way to evaluate an integral with an antiderivative with elementary functions which had previously only been defined by an anitderivative that was not an elementary function. Everything checks outs. I used 3 regular substitutions and a trigonometric substitution and I just have to...
Pentaquark are particles made out of 4 quarks and 1 antiquark, unlike mesons (quark+antiquark) and baryons (3 quarks). This is by far not the first claim of a pentaquark discovery, but I think it is the most convincing one so far. We'll see which alternative interpretations will come up in the...
I posted a thread here about Ed Leedskalnin's discovery of an electromagnet which works after the power has been cut off. The forum deleted it and gave the reason "crackpot video". The video I linked simply showed the discovery that I mentioned. It was hardly a "crackpot video". In fact, as I...
Let's say someone discovers something that can better the lives of everyone; where would they go to publish this discovery? Do they just patent/sell it or is there more to it?
(@mfb posted an article about this here, I think it deserves an own thread, and I did not find one, so I start one )

I'm a senior and a physics major at a university and I'm working on my senior project with three physics professor. I made a discovery about the non linear system I am studying which I haven't found in the literature and I would like to publish it. I won't give to much details about the...
I was wondering if this is a mistake in the movie.
Notice how those pod doors open directly into space. What happens to the air when those doors open?
Is it still in the realm of possibility that this room functions as an airlock? Why the need for the second smaller airlock then?
This is occasioned by the thread
https://www.physicsforums.com/threads/proof-multiplication-is-commutative.782057/
but being somewhat personal I thought the sometimes rather sobersided mods could find it out of place there.
I was first interested by the proposition that (n + m) = (m + n) (1) -...

Reports the direct observation of Majorana particles, by Princeton researchers. Is there anything substantive to this? - or is it just a Science writer getting it wrong?
I am looking for the famous CMS and ATLAS papers which announced the discovery of a new boson particle...
Could someone help me by posting the link here?
Hi,
I find it sad that textbooks state JJ.Thomsons, Rutherfords, Milikan, Borhs etc. discoveries as facts without actually showing the whole experiment and showing in detail how they performed the experiment and how they derived their equations. Are there any textbooks that actually do this? I...
I want to learn how mathematicians found the number e=2.7
I do not mean the way(1/1 + 1/1*2 ...),but why they found that??
How they imagine that this number will be so usefull??
What was their difficulty and they discover this number??
Thank y!

The University of Edinburgh is offering a massive online open course on "The Discovery of the Higgs Boson" to the public. This is a 7-week course, with 2 hours per week of online presentation.

Hi everybody! I would like to ask you two things. Some months ago i watched some documentaries on Discovery Channel but i don't remember the title! I can only remember that they was talking about p-brame theory and that some physicists wasn't able to describe it! And in anther they were talking...
Hello math&physic fans,
I might found a proof on Gauß formula (n²+n/2)=1+2+...n). Have anoyone seen it before?

I´m sorry for my bad english and the bad handwriting.

Anybody have any insight on what this is all about? Looks interesting...

How far-reaching are the implications of this? Presumably it could add support to or help disprove certain theories that predict the larger radius as compared to what was found. It's mind boggling, really. I'd have to say this is on par with the discovery...
We've been making things out of graphite for ages, which certainly has its uses, but interest in graphene has just started to take off recently. It's hailed as a miracle material and it seems that it was right under our noses all along - how come it took such a long time to be discovered?
Greetings,
I have been having some fun in the last couple of days by looking at the details of historically significant experiments. One such is Thomson's discovery of the electron, in which he concluded that cathode rays were, in fact, composed of negatively charged, discrete particles. But...
Okay, so I've just begun to have a grasp on the concepts of quantum chromodynamics. And what amazes me is that quarks never actually exist on their own as a single particle because of the strong interaction between them. I've read that when you try to pull apart a pair of quarks that is bonded...
This is quoted from "The Elegant Universe"

I was recently looking into how the Higgs Boson was somewhat discovered
From the article I had read it had said that a Z boson was smashed and lost it's mass creating a disturbance of mass in the area forcing the creation of the Higgs
Therefore if a Higgs Boson was created by the thurning...
From what I understand, the Higgs Boson was the last missing piece of the Standard Model (12 indivisible particles, 4 forces). Now that the Standard Model is complete, has String Theory been disproved? Is there a conflict between the Standard Model and String Theory?

Does anyone else regularly observe them?
